rc10 stealth buggy

Post by pattywagon34 »

i have a 6 gear gold pan drilled for a stealth transmission.
i cleaned the car and added radio gear ; itll run fine for a few feet then it starts to slip .. the pinion is spinning the spur, but the car is not moving.
you pick the car up, the rear wheel spin.
i found that when i took the drive shafts off ,there was a little screw in the part of the transmission where the shaft sits. i tightend that screw, and the car runs like normal, but it eventually starts slipping and the car doesnt move.
i cant tighten the screw any more and the nut on the spur is the same way i cant tighten it any more.

this buggy is 100% complete ready to drive but i cant run it because the transmission wont drive the wheels.

any tips?Thanks in advance

there is something wrong with the slipper assembly, either the pad is worn or missing, or something else bent or way worn out on the clutch plates themselves.

grab a copy of a later model rc10 manual from rc10.com to see how to assemble, and see whats missing or worn out.

sounds like someone used it with too loose a slipper setting for way to long.

Oh, I just thought of something.....check to see if the drive pin in the rear is missing, or the clutch plate is mangled on the pin. that would prevent the assembly from working as well......

It probably wouldn't hurt to tear that transmission apart and make sure that all your parts are still there and in working order. I had something similar happening with mine. Turns out that my little brother left some parts out when it was his. It could probably use a cleaning too.

Check your diff. Make sure it is tight then back off 1/8 turn.

Is it making a low groaning sound of a higher whining sound? The low groan indicates the diff is loose, and the high whine indicates the slipper is loose.

When the car is on the ground and spur gear is spinning, is the nut on the end of the shaft spinning? It sounds like the screw you are tightening is the thrust bearing screw inside the diff. The nut can wear over time, and once it is even a little bit worn it will loosen very easily, so it should be replaced. Likewise with the nut on the slipper clutch; it is under a lot of stress and can start to loosen easily when it becomes worn.

The gears are pretty durable, as are the slipper plates and outdrives, so they are likely OK. To replace everything else inside the tranny (diff balls, rings, and thrust bearing, slipper pad, thrust bearing and spring, nut, etc.) is pretty cheap. MIP 3/32" diff balls are MUCH cheaper than the Associated balls ($2.50 versus $12). Pick up some new tubes of the diff lube and black grease as well.
