Help Picking Out New Electronics

Post by jlwood4th »

I have a number of RC10s from the late eighties.

All of my electronics still work with the exception of the ESCs. I have a Novak T1 and a Novak T4 that seem to be broken.

I have NICADS that I charge with a victor engineering charger and the old Futaba servos, receiver and transmitter seem to be working correctly.

I was thinking about setting one up with brushless and lipos.

Would this Novak Havoc be a decent ESC to play with now and use with brushless and lipo later on? Would it work with nicads or only nimh and lipo?

Oh, I also have a brand new motor. Some kind of 19 turn brushed Trinity chameleon or something like that.

for a few dollars more you can get a whole brushless setup from tower.

associated has a lineup now from their rtr's with a few different motor options.

then there are a few novak brushless combos

traxxas has the velineon system you can find on tower and ebay for around $120.00

i believe castle creations even has a lower priced sport combo out now too.

the castle system is probably pretty wild, but I don't know enough about them.

I've been kicking around picking up a brushless setup, I was planning to pick up a take-out traxxas system from ebay for hopefully less than a hundred.....

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm looking for something I can get now that will work with my brushed motor and nicad batteries now. I might move to lipo and brushless if I am still having fun. In addition, I have a few more brushed motors in other cars so it would be nice to do an easy swap of the ESC.

After doing a bit more reading, it appears the Havoc only works with Novak brushed motors.

I am assuming that an ESC that can handle nimh can also handle nicad.

It’s simple in my opinion. Take the plunge and buy the following products. I promise you 100% satisfaction! I’ve tried all of these and I’ve tried/own better. You just simply don’t need anymore than this. In fact, you don’t even need this much, but…

ESC(cogging is a myth if you have a decent battery. Runs brushed/brushless. Lipo cut-off)
http://cgi.ebay.com/Castle-Creations-ESC-Sidewinder-Sport-Speed-Control-/370402608036?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563db743a4

ESC combo(don’t bother with the 5700. OVERKILL!!)
http://cgi.ebay.com/Castle-Creations-1-10-Sidewinder-ESC-W-4600kV-Motor-/370403882131?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item563dcab493

Battery/ies(forget what you’ve read, these packs are the best bang for your buck and do not disappoint)
http://cgi.ebay.com/7-4v-5000mAh-30C-Lipo-2S-7-4-Volt-RC-Battery-AKKU-WF-/160377606749?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item255740125d

Charger(works perfect with the packs above or any nimh or NiCad pack)
http://www.hobbypartz.com/thac6smbachw.html

Multiple cars?(strong enough to hold up to anything and lasts forever. Just buy it at Wal-Mart)
http://cgi.ebay.com/4-Sets-3M-DUAL-LOCK-Reclosable-Fasteners-Tape-1-x-2-5-/250653137788?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a5c175b7c

Just my opinion and anyone can argue if they choose. The Traxxas brushless combo would actually be my preference because it is slower. I’m just talking the best bargains here. IMHO :D

A Castle Creations Sidewinder can handle brushed motors, Nicads, lipos, and of course brush-less.

The havoc does brushed but only down to 27t race stock. Had traxxas setup, motors are awesome but speedy bit big and very crude no adjustment at all fine for bashing or racing on extremely high grip surfaces.
