Ultima II basher

Post by Snake Plissken »

OK, long time no post. I've been very busy with crawlers but also worked on several vintage projects in parallel which means a lot of time passes without any actual project ending! Finally finished this one though.
Got this Ultima II for $20 off ebay about 6 months ago, Judging by the front shock tower I guess it started its life as an Outlaw Ultima Truck and then got converted to a buggy.

I replaced the bent front shock tower with one from ST15 (with the anodizing removed) and installed 3Racing ZX5 shocks. I had a Triumph gearbox which I intended to use on my Ultima vintage racer but found out I'll have to cut the rear part of the body to install it, which I had no intention after all the hard work I spent painting it (Hey, that's a justifiable consideration in vintage racing!), so in it went without too much fuss.

I replaced the viper body that came with the car with a Turbo Ultima body in bad condition that I got in a lot. It was broken at the rear body mount area so I used scrap lexan to fix it, I also lengthened its sides so it would fit the Ultima II longer wheelbase. The side windows were painted so I cut them out.

I finished it off by painting it from the outside and adding nets to the side windows

I also strengthened the upper lexan fix with four 2mm screws

On my next crawling meeting I'll take it with me and have some bashing session as well!

Cool car man,I have allways liked the Ultima 2,you can get them cheap and all parts are the same as the original and those flexy chassis make them allmost indistructable.I like what you have done with the body,Looks stealth.Post some action pics when your done.

Are those triumph wheels up-front? Looks like a descent basher.
Which batteryconfiguration do you plan to use?

Yes, up front I used Triumph wheels. I had to use Triumph front axles as well since the wheels are narrower at the bearings.
I only have stick packs so this is what I use. I don't think saddle packs will have much advantage anyway, the way the battery layout was designed on this chassis means that weight balance is very similar on either configuration.
