Re: Project Unnecessary Metal: Shelfer Build
Update on the project. I knew I wanted this type of motor but it was a matter of finding one on ebay. This is a Kyosho Lemans 480 Gold, used, but it was completely rebuilt by the guy selling it and he kept all the header cards from the new parts. Also I bought this clear gear cover off ebay that I like. I need to find a gold pinion gear for the full effect. I had my son model by holding the car.
The body is finished, but I have not finished trimming it. I'm also waiting on an order of the Sidewinder stickers I need and some other details from the picture.

Man that thing is solid gold..ish. It's hard to imagine what you can do to complement this with a body. I'd almost go clear.

Paint the windows with a black tint and do a ghost gold stripe down the middle and leave the rest clear. Or something like that.RedScampi wrote:Man that thing is solid gold..ish. It's hard to imagine what you can do to complement this with a body. I'd almost go clear.

Body and wing mounted. Still more to do, but here's a crappy teaser cell phone picture.

That car turned out really good. It will look fantastic sitting on the shelf. I will be finishing up your other stuff and mailing you a package early next week including the 3mm set screws you need. I will send you a PM in a couple days.

Re: Project Unnecessary Metal: Shelfer Build
Alright, about time to wrap this up. She's 99% there but I'd really like to get the Team Associated and "Sidewinder" stickers on the body to complete this but haven't been able to source them.
All electronics are in and the car runs. I used the NIB Futaba Magnum 1024 PCM that I got from Jeff Harris earlier this year when he encountered the mother load of old stock from a closed hobby shop. It's a real beauty and a fine addition to this build. I used the servo included with the radio (Jeff kept one that I didn't need) for the steering. The ESC is another gem from Jeff's hobby shop sell-off and was new in sealed packaging, a Tekin 411-G2. The battery came from the new, assembled but never run gold pan CE I bought on craigslist a few months ago.
Here are the links to more pics of the electronics:

The car was a lot of fun to build but I should have started this build thread when I was very close to sourcing (and anodizing) all parts, and the body was completed. Took a while to sort all this out. I wished I had been able to get a new in package gold chassis, nose, and motor plate but I was able to live with it. I half wanted to rip apart the gold pan CE I got on craigslist but I was too far into this (and I used thread lock on the screws into the aluminum suspension parts so I wouldn't have to torque them hard) so I decided to let it be. I did use the long bell crank screws from the gold pan CE I got to replace the blue ones that are shown earlier in this build. And I had to cut down the standard gold screws to fit inside the front suspension arm mounts and the MIP trans.
Notice if you look close that I even found gold body clips from Racer's Edge.

And a final close-up picture, I didn't stay faithful to the sponsorship decals for the picture I was trying to reproduce with this Sidewinder snake body, especially once I saw this sticker. With all the titanium parts I worked hard to source for this build I had to put this on!

Great looking build. The snake is top notch. How does the weight compare to a plastic rc10? Does it weigh more or less than a stocker?
Also, you may want to add some gold aluminum shock caps, if you can find them...

Thanks, you're one of the enablers for this fun build!Charlie don't surf wrote:Crazy car! I am really impressed to see the metalurgic gluttony that is this RC10!
It's a tank! Definitely not something that feels like it would ever be competitive, but in that respect it also feels substantial and solid. At some point I may go back and add black anodized metal caps if I can find a perfect set. I kind of like the black/gold contrast on the shocks.badattitude wrote:Great looking build. Edit: Realized I forgot to include a photo with the radio.
