How long would it take you to build an RC10?

I always thought an interesting "race" would include building the kit. Everyone starts with the same kit (something simple like a Hornet), all the bodies are pre-painted, you BYO electronics. The buzzer sounds, you start building. First one to plop his car on the track and complete 5 laps wins.

That would make for a really cool charity race if you could get pros to build the cars, needy kids to drive them, and Tamiya to donate the kits.

I'm quite famous for slow, borderline 'challenged' builds..... I logged the time on my first RC 10 build in '86 and it took 5 evenings - total of 25 hours to get it built and running!

Today??? Probably about the same! Arthritis in the wrists does that to you!!!

I guess scr8p can make his own joke. I wasn't really implying who is fastest or a competition per say but that would be cool. Should have bought the case of them. I was just thinking back to the day of my dad and I building the first one in '86. Like others have said evenings and so forth. Seemed like it took forever. I think the six gear takes a good bit longer for me than a stealth kit.

its a trick question they are never done..... it takes me a long time to build cause i need to build it my way.. lower shocks a little (at least in the rear) ,then i need to get long ball studs with nuts (every screw that can get a nut will). i like to get a few low profile ball studs for the steering. at least mod the steering or put bearing steering in. then i make all allens the same size. only the counter sunk allens will remain the stock smaller size

I'm reasonably sure I could throw one together in 3-4 hours (or maybe even less), but my last RC10 build took over 300 hrs. That was 19 years ago when I was younger and more active.

now your older, going to work, cutting the grass, falling asleep on the sofa, etc......still takes 300 hours

HEY! Sounds like you know me!!! LOL!

I don't have to go to work anymore, but other than that you just about hit the nail on the head. I devoted close to 100 hrs. a week to RC from 1985-95 and got back into it November 2011. I am amazed at the motor and battery technology now.

Actually I am currently working on an rc car I've got over 1200 hrs. in and I can see at least a couple hundred more, and that's if I don't think of something else to do to it, you know how that goes.

I think Phin and longboardnj probably came the closest to answering correctly.

I'd be willing to bet all you guys that assemble a car in a day or 2 can drive circles around me.

I just enjoy building them and watching my son drive them.

I know 2 speeds............Wide Open and Stopped.

My son has tried to teach me to keep the car in my periphrial vision and look 6 feet or so in front of the car, but if there's an accident in front of me, I have to look at it and then steer right into the big middle of it.

I'm actually not quite that bad but CLOSE!

Sounds like you enjoy working on them also.

You can probably drive them as well.

I can take a full scale car, (along with that seat of the pants feel for what it's doing), and do pretty well, but to rely on my sight these days will get me in trouble every time.

Does turning a built car into a kit mean that all the pieces have to be whole?

If that's the case, then I'd probably be towards the rear of the field in that race as well.

Now I'm real good at turning a built car into a pile of parts, although I somtimes have trouble finding all the pieces of the pieces!

i've done speed builds the night before a race, probably around 2 hours.

but i like to take my time on the shocks, diff and turnbuckles. sometimes shocks alone can take a couple of hours to get'em just right.

My first car was a Tamiya Bigwig and it took me almost 2 weeks to do it, but I did all by myself at age 12. Every other car took about a day including both of my RC10's. All of the Tamiya rereleases I have built in recent years have taken about 6-12 hours without the body pending on complexity (Super Clodbuster took the longest)

I think if you sit me done and say do this as fast as you can I could get a 6 gear done in 2-4 hours without body but with my rere RC10 I am going to send the wife and kids somewhere for the day and enjoy a nice quiet build listening to 80's music

Yeah. That reminds me of a few years ago over on Tamiyaclub.com. The first Buggy Champ Re Re Build thread. This one gey got one early enough where he stayed up all night taking pics and bolting it together as the whole rest of the site watched with envy and curiosity. It was hilarious.
