Re: need help with cheap nicds
i wouldnt say nicd is better for bashing bt i do agreed that they are a lot cheaper. i just ordered 6 nicd 1800 packs for my 4 year old's rc10l. i didnt see a point in spending an excessive amount on batteries for multiple reasons. 1 it will only see a parking lot. 2 it will never be raced. 3 it will only get beat on and used as a trainer. and 4 the car will be driven by a 4 years old so as long as it moves its good enough.
now i looked at the packs in your links and i felt that they both costs too much.
the 1800 venom is a lot more than i would want to pay even though its a brand name.
the 2500 generic is cheaper but since its not a brand name i wouldnt buy it.
now if you are wanting to save money and get a pack from a brand that has been around for a while here are the ones i would suggest.

fusion 1800 nicd stick packs. they are along the same lines as the venom pack you posted at half the cost. this is the way i went. i cant tell you a lot about the packs just yet since mine wont be here until wendsday according to fedex. but i can tell you this. i placed my order on the 2nd late at night. the order was picked up from then around noon on the 3rd. so they wasted zero time processing the order, packing it, and shipping it. to me that means something seeing a lot of places seem to not get around to shipping for a week or ore it seems.

WOW! Thanks for the link. Heck of a deal for a newbie basher like me.

Re: need help with cheap nicds
The main advantage to running nimh vs nicad is that nimh will be a little more powerful, provide longer runtimes, and the charge wont fall off like a nicad will (comparing 1500mah-1500mah). Just like lipos are more powerful, provide longer runtimes, and can be recharged right away vs nimhs. The nicads will last for a little while but they probably wont last more than a year maybe a year and a half. The nimhs will last a couple years. Most of mine are three to four years old. 1500 mah nicad would provide probably 3-4 minutes on a full charge but the power will drop off as the charge is drained. A 1500 mah nimh would provdie around 5-6 minutes run time but would have full power until the battery was about 90% drained. Nimhs, only cost a few dollar more but are well worth the extra price. You will go through two or three nicads before the nimhs are dead. So in the long run it saves you money. Plus a lot of chargers now adays don't charge nicads as they are being phased out of the hobby. So in a few years when your nicad charger breaks there may not be any chargers left to charge your nicads.
Hope this helps. Always like to help new guys anyway I can

thanks for the info ive been in the hobby over 25years and i dont know alot about bats plus forgot alot tooa lot of chargers now adays don't charge nicads as they are being phased out of the hobby. Re: need help with cheap nicds
All I have is nimhs right now. When I race I have too 46mah nimhs. I run one then let it cool down for an hour and then put it on ythe charger and top it off. I always store them with at least half charge. Never have any problem. Nicads I think you can only run them once then let them cool off for a long while. I think it's a matter of time before they mostly go away like mechanical speed controls did and how crystal's in radios are.

I mean that crystals are being phased out. They went with synthesized crytal-less radios and then spektrum. Crystals just wont become very popular so they will be harder to find.

I think it's a matter of time before they mostly go away like mechanical speed controls did and how crystal's in radios are.less then i did years ago but i still do.. what do you mean by " how crystal's in radios are"..do you mean how you can take out the crystal in them now??i still use some radios that you cant take out the crystal..
...i cant wait to see the electronics get smaller.. my buddy just got a new radio and the receiver was smaller then the receiver he got in his radio he got a few years back..id like to see a screw in antenna too..so if you break the wire its easy to replace..

as far as the above comment on crystals, first came regular crystals that were removeable, then the synthesized systems where you turn the dials to set the channel. most recently the industry is moving away from 27/75mhz systems to 2.4ghz. I've never seen a hobby grade radio that did not chave changeable crystals(other than the 2.4/synthesized as above). The newer systems have transmitters and receivers that are bound to each other, so as to not accept a signal from any other tx/rx pair. anybody can turn on their radio at the same time as anyone else, and there are no frequency conflicts.
The standard receivers are about the same size as the old school "micro" receivers from tekin and novak. The Spektrum brand Micro RX is truely tiny, about 2.5X the width of a servo plug and just as tall. The Receiver antenna is only 2.5" long, you have to try real hard to break one of these, because it never has to go out of the body on most models. Transmitter antenna is the same length, no worries about kids poking each other, sword fighting. . .
For batteries I've recently been convinved that lipo is the way to go. Relatively cheap for the run time, and they will perform much better than any stick pack nicd/nimh. Only downside is the cost of upgrading your charger to a compatable one. I've been running lipos in theb basher cars and haven't had one go too low yet. the runtime seems amazingly long for the stated capacity, and with the better voltage(under load) and lighter weight vs nicd, performance is great.
The lipos do not like to be discharged too far, I ordered a battery alarm, but haven't gotten it yet. it plugs into the balance port and monitors cell voltage. once one drops below the cutoff, an audible alert sounds. Not as fancy as the newer esc's with cutoffs built in, but much cheaper than replacing lots of esc's.
I'll post a full report once I get it.
