Having Motor problems!
Hey guys and gals. I'm new on the site and would like to say it has become an addiction. Much to my wifes dismay .
I have an RC10 CE that has ran great for years. I've managed to destroy a few lexan bodies with it. Here's the problem. Just dug it out after 5-6 years of not running it, and bought a new 3800 Nimh battery pack. Since then I've progressed onto Deans Connectors, and now I've burned 1 motor. I have a Novak 410 M1 ESC. I've taken the tranny apart and checked for any thing that could be out of the ordinary. I'm not sure if I put it together wrong in the first place and have never had a battery that would really test the full capability! It has a 6 gear tranny if that will help. Thanks in advance for any help! I can't say enough about how great this site is.

Re: Having Motor problems!
there are a number of things that could be the problem. i would first check the drive train. make sure it rolls as freely as possible. then I would check the gearing on the motor. you could be over geared ( pinion to big for the motor). with a battery the size you have, you will get longer run times. almost to long. most motors should only run 5 minutes or less. any longer then that and the motor will get to hot and put a lot of undo wear on the comm. and the brushes. I hope this helps. let me know how it turns out. good luck.

Re: Having Motor problems!
your speed control could be it. make sure you have the required capacitors on the motor. i never tried a battery that high on a older speed control. that maybe could be causing the problem? what does your speed control wiring (battery and motor) look like?

Re: Having Motor problems!
Thanks for the feedback guys. Sorry for the slow reply on my part. I went to a fairly local hobby shop and had one of the shop guys look at it. He said that the battery could be the problem, due to the run time capable. I've mixed and matched parts on this great little car for so long without any good research that I'm surprised it runs as well as it does. I'll try to upload a picture of the ESC to motor wiring and see what you guys think. My main goal for the car is to do a Ferretti boxart paint job for a new body that I have and to get it running as fast as possible within its limitations. If anyone has any ideas on what kind of tranny/battery/ESC/motor configurations might work it would be great. I've had this car for about 15 years and never intend on getting rid of it. I love it too much! I will try to eventually go the full bearings route all around the car. I do have a question in regards to the roller and runner lingo. I'm sorry to sound so dumb, but the roller is for shelves and the runner is for work right? I did purchase 2 other RC10s on ebay at one time and did notice that they both seemed to roll very freely in comparison to my car without motors in them. Maybe that's the problem right there! Many Thanks again for the feedback and thanks to all of you guys for inspiring me to build better and better cars.

Yes today I inquired about tire sets that scr8p had on a A&L Rc10 buildup. I believe that was the third mesage that I have typed to date. I was wondering if the tires could still be purchased from somewhere!

the first thing that should be decided on is if you would like to stay true to the year and keep the car as vintage or if you would like the fastest rc10 possible. that will help everybody understand in what direction you would like to go.

Re: Having Motor problems!
The only things that I would like to keep vintage would be the lexan body and the chassis. I'm open to any suggestions in regard to other upgrades. Thanks Again
Re: Having Motor problems!
If it were my car I would go with a stealth tranny and full bearings, it sounds like if you have bushings in the 6 gear trans they are worn out and after a few miutes of running they heat up and start to sieze up your trans putting extra strain on your motor.

Re: Having Motor problems!
stealth tranny, full ball bearing, brush-less motor, and li-po. this would be an expensive set-up, but it would give you an rc10 that would require little maintenance and would be the fastest on the block. the li-po would also run longer and the brush-less would be able to handle the run time without any wear. this is how i would set up any electric car for racing.
If you are looking for something cheaper. Then just bearings and a stealth tranny like Markt311 said. I would also add mip cvds. less wear, less problems.

Thanks markt311 and dell. Just the insight that I needed. I also plan on building a vintage roller, no hop-ups. This might be hard to do, but it is a worthy cause. Thanks again guys for all of your help. I'll try to post pics of the car as it goes though its tranformation.

Re: Having Motor problems!
Okay, it's been four years since my last post. 1 kid later and 5 moves and I'm still working on this little project of mine. It seems that finding or winning a stealth tranny is pretty tough for me and I've decided to get a bearing set for my 6 gear tranny. I know that I will buy from avid but I'm not sure as to the sizes I need. Can anyone help me with the right sizes for tranny. I'm also going to buy bearings for the rear hubs and axles. Another question is can anyone suggest a good lipo esc brushless motor combo that would work with the project. I am just driving this around my neighbor hood anyway and i love this little bugger. I plan on purchasing all of the necessary components before another four years go by. As soon as I can figure out this image uploaded I'll post pics of the project. Thanks for all of the help a while back. All of you guys are a tremendous inspiration to an old kid like me.
P.S. I will get pictures of this darn thing posted one way or another!

Re: Having Motor problems!
On the trans you could just buy all the parts and put it together yourself. The hardest item to locate is the case, but you could just go with the RPM case that is still made and available and then all of the Stealth parts are available from Towerhobbies. As for brushless esc, I am in the midst of a graphite restore and for the modern ESC/Motor I picked up a combo from the B4.1 brushless rtr that I got off of ebay for $50 or so which might give you what you need, so check Ebay (and the BST on this and other RC sites) and you'll find some good deals.RC10 Junkie wrote:Okay, it's been four years since my last post. 1 kid later and 5 moves and I'm still working on this little project of mine.
