Kyosho Nitro Thrasher

In 1992 Kyosho debuted a new 1/10 4wd Nitro powered Monster Truck they dubbed, the Nitro Thrasher. Rather than build upon the previous Nitro Brute chassis Kyosho took a more 1/8 USA-1/Burns approach to the 1/10 Thrasher by basing it off their GP-10 4wd nitro platform. As a result, the Thrasher hit the ground with an aluminum plate chassis and Kelron/glass filled nylon construction. Its four-wheel independent suspension featured lower a-arms with suspension limiting screws and adjustable camber links to control articulation while damping was handled by a set of plastic bodied, oil-filled, coilover shocks hanging from aluminum shock towers. Guiding the truck was a twin bell crank steering system with spring loaded servo saver and adjustable tie rods. The motor, mounted in the center of the chassis, used a pinion and spur primary drive to rotate a bevel gear diff equipped prop shaft that stretched down the length of the chassis to a pair of final drive belts that spun the bevel gear diffs at each end of the truck. Dogbone axles output power through plastic front knuckles and rear carriers to a set of two-piece, high offset, white nylon wheels clamping down on 5.4-inch-tall V-Tread Monster Truck tires. Topping the truck off was a highly detailed Ford F-250 clear lexan body dressed out with a chrome plated grille, side mirrors, triple roll bar, off-road lights, as well as front and rear bumpers. The partially assembled kit included bushings, an O.S. .12 CZ-R motor with recoil starter, muffler, screw top fuel tank, fuel bottle and glow starter, less radio:

My first hobby grade R/C! If it wasn't such a great truck, there's a chance I'd have soured on the hobby, and RC10Talk would no longer exist today as a result.

It had a few small faults though as the centers of the wheels broke easily under nitro power, and the bell crank steering components were too weak to handle the tire size. After going through too many wheels, I went to a local hobby shop to see if they had any suggestions on a fix. After going through dealer catalogs, it was inferred that the Kyosho Car Crusher Series vector/turbine/hurricane style wheels might be stronger due to the design. That ended up being the case, and I never broke another. The bell crank steering was fixed by my father who made new components at work by brazing metal pieces together. I think I still even have the parts! Some say the belts were the weak points but I don't recall that being a problem.

In February 2019 the stars aligned and one showed up on eBay that was in practically new condition, and I had the money to spend so I bought it. Since then I've been collecting parts to make it somewhat like I had back in the day.

It's a slim chance but still crazy to think about. A 'what-if' scenario if you will.


I've never really considered it being based off the Inferno 10 before although similar, and I believe its parts work to eliminate the belts if desired. I always thought the Rampage, Outlaw Rampage, Thunderbird, Corvette ZR-1, and Ford RS-200 were its closest relatives since they were all based off each other.

I could see that. The Inferno 10 was the closest model to parallel the USA-1/Burns analogy. Swapped Inferno 10 to the GP-10 lineup designation for clarity. A little less playful, but more accurate.
