Cougar Classic Motor and ESC rec’s

My wife got me a Cougar Classic kit for my birthday. I am looking for Motor, ESC, and Servo suggestions. Not sure if I want brushed or brushless. I’m not a racer. I’m a collector that runs stuff in the schoolyard and in the dirt lot at my firehouse.

Let me know what your suggestions are.

Are you looking for new or nice condition used? Running NiMh or LiPo? Overall I prefer running brushed motors, vintage ESC and receiver/radio, but they all have more limitations than modern stuff. For admiring on the shelf when not running, the vintage stuff looks awesome too.

I'm with Frankentruck on the brushed comment. Especially if you have any old nostalgic ones you can clean up. This esc is hard to beat for casual running imo. No set up at all. You can afford to have one in every casual runner too.

It’s a rere kit so I’m going to run it sometime at least.

I have a bunch of Tamiya Motors and a couple of the 1060 esc’s in my toolbox so I can go that route and even use Lipos 2s batteries.

I defer to the group on the brushed motors and the aesthetics for a display piece.

If you just want a worry free runner, though, the 13.5 (or even 17.5) HW Justock combo is way more powerful than necessary for $110-ish and you never have to touch it. No commutator cleaning/cutting, no brush replacements, no springs, no run time limits....

I have not had a failure myself, but folks have had issues with the 2 piece pulley on the top layshaft where the plastic pulley engages the drive pin. I use glue or epoxy just to be safe. I think this pulley engagement might be the reason for Schumacher's recommended 17.5 motor limit. (The Pro transmission uses a 1 piece alloy layshaft/pulley). It is nothing to lose sleep over, but if you haven't built your buggy yet, it is worth the extra few seconds to add a drop of glue. Shimming to remove any side play in the layshaft has been suggested as another solution. It isn't a bad idea, but, in my estimation, doesn't address the real issue, which is the pin driving into the plastic.

I realize you only asked about motors, not trans building tips. I only mention this here in case you decide to "go big" on the power.

If you want something with a bit of a UK attitude to go in the Cougar, maybe a NOSRAM speed control.

The Evil is supposed to be able to do brushed and brushless, and LiPo. I'm not sure how hard it will be to find one though.

I’m probably going to use the 1060 for now since it’s on hand. I hav the Justock combos on my B6 and my B7 and love them so I might save up for one of those in the near future. Stupid thing is I have been really trying to get finances in order since I am retired but every time I turn around AE or Tamiya want me to get deeper in the hole lol!

I am very interested in the FW motor though. When will they be available again?

I’m going to lose my mind. I was able to get into the box and check things out. I got to the sticker sheet and it was not what I was expecting. No racing stripes or the like. So I’m going to have the worst painted Cougar Classic ever! I say that because the only thing I do better than painting is soldering, and I suck at that! What did I get myself into?

Schumacher doesn't seem too interested in "box art". The Masami kit is about the only kit they have done where the decal sheet is specifically made to help you reproduce the box art car in the way Tamiya (and pretty much everyone else) does.

Schumacher takes the approach that "Here's a picture of a finished kit; now go build yours. Oh, and here's a bunch of stickers!"

As far as you having the worst painted Cougar, hold my beer!

I just want a nice looking paint job. Not like my B7 which is just plain blue.
