Kyosho Inferno MP5

Post by K-Max »

Hello all,

I've put together my second Inferno MP5. This one would be different from the first in the use of more aftermarket options, and also going back to the original shorter wheelbase.

I started first with the center diff assembly. The center diff is a Fioroni "Japan Traction" Torsen diff. To this I attached Kyosho's IFW-3 steel main gear, and the IFW-8 alloy center diff mounts would support them. Brake discs are doubled up front and rear, they are carbon and made by Central RC. The top carbon plate is also carbon, from ARK Japan.

This time, I've opted for a main chassis from Fioroni. It is hard anodized like Kyosho's IFW-1 chassis, but has additional rear gearbox mounting holes to stretch the wheelbase. I will use the original MP5 wheelbase.

The center, front and rear drive shafts will be MIP Shiny CVDs. At the rear gearbox, I installed IFW-15 and IFW-16 suspension hangers for 1 degree toe-in. On the shock towers I'm using BSW-41 steel shock bushings. The rear wing stays receive the IFW-7 blue supports.

On the upper arms I've added IFW-23 turnbuckles. The steering turnbuckles are IFW-2. The alloy C-hub used is also from Fioroni.

The blue servo savers are the ballraced IFW-4. Apparently they are made of DuPont nylon and are stronger. The steering Ackermann plate is the IFW-14. The servo saver top plate is a carbon piece by the Japanese brand Big Wave.

I went with period correct KO PS-1003 FET servos for both steering and throttle. These would have required filing of the radio plate to fit, but I avoided that by unscrewing the lower servo case when getting them through the radio plate openings. The radio plate posts are IFW-54, these are basically blue versions of BSW-54 purple posts.

The powerplant is the OS Max RZ-B engine with a buggy shaft. Here it can be seen with the 39514 manifold. The clutch bell is BSW-68, with 2-piece pinion and bell housing construction that was later on replaced with stronger single-piece ones. I noted with interest it is made in Italy.

For the front differential, I exchanged the factory unit with a Fioroni Torsen as well. The rear diff would remain a standard differential. The IFW-5 front anti-roll bar is added too. The muffler is the Kyosho BSW-48. The cross pins of the MIP has slightly larger diameter that would not fit into the slotted recess of the wheel hubs, so I had some stepped diameter cross pins made.

Finally now, with wheels, tyres and rear wing added. Tyres are Kyosho's BSW-47 micro blocks.
