Vintage Edinger motor stopped working

I have an Edinger motor that was working ok. After a week it got slower and slower until it stopped. With Tamiya motors and prewar lionel trains a quick spray with electric contact cleaner usually fixes this. Well after a couple of shots with contact cleaner it works for a couple of minutes then stops.

Any idea on a fix?

It's ancient. The brushes are probably shot and the comm has probably seen better days. And it was far from high-end to begin with.

It's out. Looks nice and clean. I will get pictures later tonight.

If you have a comm lathe, you can carefully knock the motor apart and rebuild it. I've saved a couple of them.

Is yours an offroad style motor with replaceable brushes?

If you have a comm lathe, you can carefully knock the motor apart and rebuild it. I've saved a couple of them.

I don't have any of that equipment.

you may be able to get by disassembling the motor, cleaning it, replacing the brushes and springs if that was the problem. You can also use a fiberglass pen to try and clean some of the burn off the comm. It depends on the motor.

Those brushes are shot. There probably isn't any spring tension on them.

Ok. I have a set in the package that came new in package old stock. I guess I will be cracking them open lol.

Replaced the brushes. Cleaned it up. Dropped some oil in the bushing. I don't know how to take it apart so I can't check the commutator.

I have never opened one, but I have read various methods on this site. If no one responds, you might try searching. Your motor has been opened at least once already as evidenced by the motor tabs. You might be able to get a small flat blade screwdriver under them and pry them up to remove the cummutator since they don't appear to have been pushed all the way down last time.

In case you don't know how JuicedCoupe determined that your brushes were shot just from the photo, look at the springs, specifically the part pushing on the back of the brush.

The brushes were shot. The new ones were a lot bigger when I replaced the old ones. I saved the old ones for "original parts ' I have collected. I will probably give it a quick run and then shelf it with my other restoration jobs and original builds from long ago.
