Trying to make a Tra**as SRT fast !

I "think" that the Nitro Rustler, Bandit, and Drag Slash uses the correct outer hinge pins. They share the same front arms, with 1/8" pins.

There should be something lightweight available for the Drag Slash.

The Nitro Rustler also uses the early style caster and steering block arrangement.

Many many thanks to Chris (1300GT) for machining up a set of aluminum axles for me. They fit much better than the crappy steel ones and shave off 7 grams.

Some pretty high end electronics going into it..... XR10 Pro 17.5 combo with Zombie 6000 Shorty 140c/280c and extra large capacitor. I'm also happy to see "Wet Noodle" is still a thing and Deans is still going, too bad they don't make their solder any more as it was hands down the best

After an epic long delay in shipping I finally have the remaining parts to finish it. It's starting to look pretty good for a Traxxas.

I use Kester solder, no complaints (other than price and availability).

The Deans stuff was silver solder, I haven't found anything as good. We'd be a lot more limited for choice here in Australia.


I've organised my springs and pinions, I don't know how well the pinions will hold up but we'll give them a try, they are super thin!

Phase timing on this motor is excellent!!

This really an incredible build. I love the attention to detail, especially all the small changes to save weight. It's amazing how much time and energy are spent to sort all the little details that many folks gloss over.

It's a great looking truck. I hope it runs as good as it looks!

Thanks guys, I didn't originally set out to build a specific stock truck but early on while collecting parts I was taken back by how unnecessarily heavy some of the parts were. I thought I could build something much better and that's how we ended up where we are now.

I hope it runs well too, my only concern is I won't really have much time to work any bugs out so the maiden race could either be good or really bad. I also have some concerns for the stock slider drive shafts coming apart at the joints, I wanted the VXL sliders but haven't sourced a pair yet.

I've tested the radio with the module and everything works great. Unfortunately I doubt I'll have enough time to find an antenna to modify a spare Futaba module so it will just "hang" in the back of the radio for now. Not ideal but it should last a weekend hopefully. A Futaba 3PJ Super would be the period correct radio for this truck but the Magnum Sr. is my favorite

Lastly in keeping with the Futaba theme and keeping it somewhat old school I chose this low profile oldie but goodie. It's really not that old in the grand scheme of things but considering how much servo/brands have changed in the past few years. And surprise surprise, it's light

I hate painting bodies as I suck at painting, it's good from far but far from good. I don't know if my Tamiya tape was old or what but I suffered a lot from edge bleed, the tape felt a little different then I remembered it. Maybe it's time to try a different tape. I should learn to use liquid mask but I don't have a steady enough hand.

At least it's presentable and will look great going around the track. I hate the reproduction MCI grill decal but it is what it is, better than nothing.

It looks pretty good from the other side of the world. I'm sure a few well placed stickers will take care of any unsatisfactory spots.

Dude, that body is just fine. Won't notice it a bit from the driver's stand and Tra**as pooped the bed AFTER the SRT. So you're good there as well.

I still need to figure out gearing, timing, ESC programming and any bugs that arise with no prep time.... so if I even finish a heat I'll be happy. I don't even know if I can program the ESC with the older Multifunction LCD program card or not at this stage.

This has been a fantastic build! Thank you for bringing us on the journey with you. The SRT is one of my grail trucks, including in the factory works converted form but I found my other grail truck the storm 2000 which I need to get up and running

With regards to gearing, I can try to help if you need a starting point, I just need to know what motor is in there and the number of teeth on the spur.


The futaba 9551 is my favourite servo, great choice
