E-Maxx HV-Maxx 4.5 motor grenaded... opinions please

Post by ahenderl »

So, I picked up a couple new batteries for my 2006-ish E-Maxx and it would not run. It hasn't been run since about 2014 or so. I didnt remember any crazy breakage the last time it was run...but who knows?

Now it flat out will not move on it's own. Steering works, trans servo works, but only slight strain noise when I give the motor power.

It has an early HV-Maxx 4.5 system. It's early enough that it has a stand alone lvc for lipo use. I opened up the motor & found this:

I'd like to get it running again. What would be a good replacement for the Novak 4.5? Would it be better to buy a combo and swap out the esc as well as the motor? If so, are there any dual battery esc's still out there for these things?

For my bashing, the 4.5 was always fun and plenty fast. I'd like something at least comparable in speed. It doesn't need to be faster (maybe a little) because it was fast enough before that I could never really get through a full charge without breaking something anyway.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I'd like to use the new batteries I just bought for it...2ea GensAce 7200 2S 70C lipos.

Here's a few more pics of the ole truck...probably my most fun basher for sure:

I had that same thing happen with my emaxx. After some research, I found out that some of those Novak motors didn't have a sintered rotor, meaning that were brittle and prone to failure. I lucked out and found a Novak sintered replacement rotor kit on eBay. It took a while to clean all the magnet particles out of the can, but it was an easy replacement. I also had to purchase a new pinion gear for the larger rotor shaft.

There's one left here: https://www.banditshobbies.com/store/p6480/NOVAK_%235924%3A_HV_5MM_Sintered_Rotor_Upgrade_Kit.html (though I've never ordered from here).

Thanks for the link...I ordered it.

The rotor came in and everything seems to be working well. I'm waiting on a new pinion as the replacement rotor is 5mm instead of 1/8".

I set this truck up about 12 years ago & it's only been run once (when it broke) since my son was born in 2009. That's when my hobby room became a nursery and all my toys were relegated to boxes in the garage and later a storage building as we built a new house.

It was geared 12/76 and even with larger tires seems a tad conservative. I've read lots of negative stuff on the old Novak HV-Maxx so maybe that's why mine survived. I will say it was plenty fast for my style of bashing.

I ordered a 12 & 13 tooth pinion along with a new Robinsons Racing metal 72 tooth spur & a couple sets of slipper clutch pads and we should have my old beater back up and running again.

Sounds like we have nearly identical Emaxx trucks. I think the Novak system is a great option for this truck, though I do still have concerns for the life expectancy of the gearbox and differential internals. I still run the stock plastic axles and driveshafts as my fail safe, so hopefully they will continue to snap off well before anything more important (or harder to find). Happy bashing!
