How to disassemble CAT XLS shocks

I bought myself a rerelase CAT XLS (my first Schumacher car!) and need to disassemble a shock. Can someone tell me how to remove the internal circlip that holds the o-rings and washers without causing damage?

The only easy and correct way is to use circlip pliers.
