cutting / routing G10 ?

Post by rctenracer »

Hello all hope everyone is having a great summer. I ordered a set of 63551 wide arms from shapeways for a RC10 so I can run B4/B5 hex wheels on the rear. Little concerned about the durability of the shapeways arms. That said I have a scrap piece of .25 " G10 that I can get two rear arms out of. My plan is to make a template of the rear arms and route new ones out of G10 using a carbide trimming bit. Just wondering if the carbide bit will cut G10 or melt it before I dive in any further.

You won’t melt it, but you may burn it. You may want to rethink it before taking the time to try. With the way the g10 is laminated, it will want to split very easily on the hinge pin hole. I cut g10 daily.

You can pick up a chunk of 1/4” delrin fairly cheap and it will take abuse a lot better. The problem then is cutting it without melting. I use an Amana 0 flute bit to cut these at very slow rpm and moderate travel speeds. Still working on the jig for drilling the hinge pin holes and arm screw holes.

Yes that would be a little more difficult.

Update to my first post . Received the arms from shapeways and they seem to be very durable .
