Flat sided can info?
Does anybody have any info on this unusual can and end bell please? Never seen one before.

Re: Flat sided can info?
It's an MG Exterminator label, and came in a batch of 10 MG's. I ran them and collect them, but never seen this one before. The batch comes with a few team specials, so this might be a one-off experimental MG motor perhaps.

Re: Flat sided can info?
I've been told it might be a bit of a one-off prototype that was being tested by MG, but am awaiting more info.

Re: Flat sided can info?
Just a quick note on this as i forgot to update the thread.
I managed to track down and speak to Mick Goddard (Mr.MG), who is now approaching 80 years old(!) and ask him about this. He told me he had been working on a batch of 12 of these flat-sided motor cans, and only one was ever released out to one of his team drivers for testing - the same guy i indirectly sourced it off. He also said he would still expect this to way out perform anything else he ever made due to the magnet strength and elevated torque output. He machined the endbell and can base himself. Pretty cool! I forgot to ask him where he sourced the can itself, so I will try to gather more information on that from him.
I have quite a few original MG armatures to try out in it, so hopefully i will have it up and running soon to see how it performs on the dyno.

Re: Flat sided can - UPDATE
Well, a little progress on this MG prototype today. One motor builder has had this motor for a total of 12months and failed to get it going. With a fresh armature it wouldn't even spin up under power; totally dead.
A second guy popped up and said he would like to look at it, somebody who had been as personal friend of Mr.Reedy in the past and also somebody who ran his own race team and built his own motor brand BRM. He has had the motor for 24hours and has got it up and running
The builder thinks the entire motor has been fabricated in the MG workshop, can, base plate and endbell. Pretty damn cool if you ask me, and i love the base of the can which has had those slots machined in before the end plate was secured into place.
Supposedly according to Mick Goddard this motor will generate a lot of torque, so we have actually opted for a milder wind of armature to make the thing very smooth and driveable. MG were known for using the ceramic 'Race Prep' armatures for a period of 8 months through the summer of 1990 (they also used the black can wet magnet Race Prep 27T standard and labelled it their Orange Dot around the same time), and as i had a nice mild 20Single ceramic armature in my collection i though we would give this a go. The can has now been zapped (no mean feat as it didn't sit correctly in the zapper at all!), and the motor has been soft-built in order to check the tolerances etc... are suitable. Tomorrow the hope is for the comm to be skimmed the bearings and brushes to be replaced with new and then the whole unit will be locked down ready for dyno testing. Just got to find a dyno it will fit onto now
Here's the quick mock-up from today - pretty wild looking!!

Re: Flat sided can info?
Hand made endbell needs a bit of a clean up, but still looks like it came from Mars.
