Look what you made me do!! - Updated pics with resurrection

Post by call-911 »

Alright, you guys got me... I just grabbed this one up off of ebay.. I've got the seller recalculating his shipping, but I already won the auction for $64. A little black dye to the nylon and some TLC to the tub and a re-anodizing and I'll be on my way to a modernized siebenelch RC10.

Nice find. Please show us the end result after you "siebenelch" it. I am in the process of doing a similar mod myself.

I'm SURE this is mentioned somewhere on this board, but what's the best prep to do to the nylon to either removed the pink/red dye job or to just prep the surface well enough to ensure that the black dye takes and there's no sign of the red tint? I read using two bags of black dye helps, but are there other tricks?

Use the liquid RIT dye. Works better and is cheaper. I have used a cap full or two with great results in about 20-25mins in a med size sauce pan. As far as prep, just make sure to get any dirt or oil/grease off the parts first. Lowes / Home Depot sells a good adhesive / oil grease remover which is biodegradable. Works great and quickly plus you can use it in the sink w/o worrying about the environment. Its in a white bottle called Motsenbokers Liftoff.

Btw, the only way to remove dye from your red nylon pieces is to purchase new ones all together.

Thanks for the tips! Once I go black will the red still be noticable at all?

Nope. Just let it soak until you think it's black enough, then let it sit another 10-15 minutes in the dye.

Add a tablespoon of table salt to the dye pot, too.

And if you like both of your limbs where they are right now, go to the grocery store and buy a few of the tin cooking casserole trays and use those on the gas grille to get your water going. The stove as a second choice, but wear rubber gloves and use LOTS of paper towels to make sure there is no splatter anywhere.

The casserole pan on the BBQ grille might save a marriage. ;)

Oh yeah, and I see you have the A&L steering. I wouldn't dye that part. Its very hard to find and if you decide to part with it someone might give you more than you expect on the steering kept its original color.

Yep, I'll keep the A&L steering the way it is. I just need to get rid of the raspberry nylon mess. :)

I have to second Eau's recomend of using the BBQ grill burner. One time I was dyeing and the dye steamed off and went all over the cabinets and the plastic on the stove. I was scrubbing for two hours trying to get it all off.

another +1 on the BBQ, I am lucky enough my BBQ has a side burner. I boil rims to remove tires and dye my parts there...I keep a pan under the Q just for this purpose.

I boil my dye pan while it is in the roasting dish so over spill goes into the dish. And I am not even married

Nice car btw the chassis and nose especially look like new.
