Mark was extraordinarily brave to drive that car in a field full of aluminum pan tanks. I've raced with him for some time and have had plenty of discussions with him about his take on racing. He has an interesting philosophy of wearing the least armor and making sure you don't get hit (in R/C terms, that means running the lightest car with the fewest strengthening mods and avoiding bad drivers on the track). He makes a fair point that when you try to strengthen your car, that means you are planning to crash and so you will not drive as well or carefully as a result.
He is 100% right; however, this works for him, because a lot of people know and respect Mark, and know that he is faster. So most people jump out of his way throughout qualifying and mains. Combine that with few unforced errors, and then you have some very competitive runs. Most other drivers would not get that kind of treatment throughout a race day and will end up replacing more parts as a result. I know of one driver in particular (I won't name names, but several people had a problem with the same guy), who was a problem in multiple classes and simply would not move out of your way no matter how much faster you were. Every race event has people like that, which is why I prefer to run tougher cars. I do run my NIX91 and it's great, but never in a race and absolutely never ever ever ever when there is a Traxxas on the track.
That being said, Mark and I had a great race in Q3 for 2wd buggy. He made a Hail Mary pass on me over the jump sequence in front of the driver's stand that I never thought he'd even try. I guess I underestimated his determination to qualify well
