Advice for first jump to a new sensored/brushless system

Post by Francis »

Hello!

I'm in the market to buy a new sensored/brushless system. I don't live near a race track to ask locals unfortunately!
I drive 2wd buggy and stadium trucks on high bight surfaces for the most part. I only practice and rarely race.

Some time ago a person at the track allowed me to drive their 2wd buggy with a sensored brushless system and I was hooked. I liked the silky control and smooth starts although the brushless was underpowered compared to my older Velineon system (my only frame of reference). I want to get sensored.

I also want power that is a little stronger in the mid range and faster at the top end of my Velineon. Maybe 15-20% stronger overall using only 2s power. Maybe you guys can suggest something of good value?

Warmly,

Everyones idea of power is subjective.

Going by numbers alone the Velinion (3500kv) is about the same as a 10.5T (3800kv). If you want something with a little more kick I'd suggest an 8.5T (4050 kv)

I highly recommend Hobbywing so I would choose an 8.5T combo with 120amp V2.1 esc.

To complicate things even more you could take advantage of the V2.1's dynamic timing and make a 10.5T just as fast (if not faster) but still have the drivability and smoothness of the 10.5
I was old school - when old school wasn't cool !

I have had good luck with Novak as well. All I use is sensed ESC/motor combos. Especially on my crawler rigs.

I dunno man, everyone is always surprised when I tell them I run a Castle sensorless system. They ask what I'm running, I tell them, and they just walk away in disbelief. I know that doesn't help with your question, but don't count out the sensorless stuff just yet. I can see where they'd be great with the crawlers running constantly at very low rpm's, but at the track there are very few times where you run slow.

I have several sensorless combos, none of them gave me cogging issues; this includes ESCs by EZRun, Bullistorm, Leopard Toro and Turnigy, and motors by EZRun, Leopard Toro, Speedpassion, Tacon.

The only system that gave me cogging issues is when I used a Speedpassion sensorless motor with the Castle Sidewinder ESC. I blame that on the ESC and not the motor, because the motor seemed to work fine with some of the other sensorless ESCs.
