Tamiya Brat wheels on 1/4

Post by SteveK »

I want to use a set of Brat tires on my buggies, but I want to use the Tamiya rear wheels so I can swap them between my RC10 and my Wild One. CRP has the adapters, but they say you need an extended axle or some kind of barrel nut, and they don't have either right now.

Has anybody tried this? Is enough axle showing to fit something like the thin 1/4" 8-32 nut (with locking compound?)

Unfortunately the barrel nuts are necessary. Due to the thickness of the plastic drive adapter and the wheel itself, an RC10 axle will not extend past the face of the Tamiya wheel. There's just nothing to put a standard nut on.

That's a bummer. I'll have a figure something else out for now I guess. Thanks for the info.

I really dont know much about the wheels your trying to use but if you need a longer axle, RC carbon works makes an extended rear axle in the 3/16 size. You have to run a dogbone with those but it will give you more room.

Are blackfoot wheel hubs a different size than frog wheel hubs?

Even if they are, there's plenty of blackfoot monster truck wheel adapters from JG and Andy's on eBay that you can at least steal the barrel nuts from.

I think the only problem is the depth of the nuts- probably could just be trimmed

just watch the thread pitch.....the tamiya ones are likely metric vs standard for the associated parts.

Sorry, to clairify my above statement about the depth of the nut- I'm referring to using the conversion made for the trucks (Blackfoot etc) wheels on a RC10 axle. So yes, 1/4 barrel nuts but the truck wheels are deep so those barrel nuts would have to be cut down. Tamiya doesn't use a barrel nut- their axles are longer on the trucks

Thinking about it aren't only the Blackfoot's front axles longer than the Brat/Frog's?

Pretty sure the rears are too. There's a lot of meat on the adapter side of the truck wheels

The Tamiya front axles are definitely longer on their trucks, but the rear axles are the same between the buggies and trucks of that vintage. The rear axles were already pretty long as it is.

All of these JG/CRP/Andy's/whatever truck wheel adapters are more or less the same thing. They are more accurately a Tamiya rear wheel adapter, not specifically just for truck wheels. Barrel nuts from one company should work with any wheel adapter. There aren't different lengths for truck and buggy wheels.

Thanks for all the input. I just picked up a JG wheel adapter set with barrel nuts, so I should be good to go. There was an Andy's set on there, but they didn't quite look like they mated with the Tamiya wheels.

A short-arm suspension set I got a while ago came with some aged Brat tires on Associated rear rims and practically trashed Tamiya front wheels came with the extended metric front axles to bolt the wheels right up to them. I picked up some new wheels and tires, so I can now keep the older Brat tires for rears only on some project. Or just sell them with a huge bunch of wheels and tires to clear out my workshop lol

Well, I was going to post some pics for reference but I guess you don't need them anymore. :)

It's still nice to see what I'm getting. I scoured the RCCA back issues and they didn't have anything beside pictures of the wheels already mounted.
