skyline gtr lazer based rally car

Post by rccars4sal »

Heres an oddball that I built years ago. The body, wheels, tires, bumper and body mounts came from a skyline gtr kit, based on lazer alpha. The plastic fantastic lazer for play bashing turned into a road car!

So, I built up a proper zx chassis,, gave it ball diffs, full bearings, universals in front, gold shocks. Could have a zxr slipper clutch too, but still needs the friction pads. The bottom chassis plate is mint except for some tape goo that stuck it to a belly pan. Everything else is in same shape,, slightly used, but otherwise excellent. Towers are some aftermarket brand, new. Cosmetics and rolling stock were taken from the new kit. I still have the rest of the lazer alpha in baggies in a box.

Stuff like this is awesome. I wish they built modern rally cars on 4wd buggy platforms unlike the touring car platforms nowadays. The 1/8 scale ones aren't bad but they are expensive.

But technically isn't the calsonic skyline a touring car not rally?

Yeah, probably touring is more accurate. Even lowered, this thing has alot of suspension travel. I guess I would call anything buggy based as a rally car, myself anyway. Looks like kyosho called it a group A. Pretty sure there was another celica gt4 on this same platform, but thats it, besides the lazer2000 and alpha.

This car was originally built on the factory alpha chassis. There is soo much drag in the stock drive train, and the plastic suspension is soooo bad,, it had to be converted to zx stats at a minimum. Lots of good parts carry over to the race lazers though, diffs, belts, metal hardware, axles, wheels, some shafts..

I see some similarities, but it's more ZX than Alpha-based touring / rally car now.... compare it to my GT4 here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=119714

I was going to put that front blue alloy shock tower (it's a GPM part, by the way) on my Celica, but while it would have physically fit, there was too much else that had to be changed, especially when you consider things like solid links (instead of turnbuckles).... your car looks nice, by the way.

Currently the only things alpha on the car are front bumper and front gear box. So, the wheels and tires on your celica gt4,, did those come stock on that car? I have a set just like that and they are looking for a proper home.

Yes, those are the original Celica wheels and rally tyres - unfortunately, hard to find a part number from the manual, as they have no part number in the build, and the parts listing is in Japanese

Those wheels are white Optima/Lazer wheels. The tires were used on a lot of other Kyosho Scale Cars. If I can find the manual to my Citroen ZX I'll see if I can find the part numbers.

Looks superb. Do you have part numbers for the body mount kit and bumper?

Your thread reminds me of some of my own builds. I used a set of those silver wheels on my Turbo Optima Mid SE:

... and the tires are super good looking. I used a set on my not finished Citroën ZX Optima Mid LWB Rally build:

I like the evolution of yours! :)

Thanks very much for the comments! This is one of those cars I would like to duplicate with tatty parts so I could run it.

Best I can do for part numbers is for bumper, its sprue C which is LZ-05 or LZ-5.

Body mounts are the HG quick mounts part number 39502

Do you guys know about part number gtw4 or gtw-04? They are radial tires for the land max super 8. They look very similar to these 1/10 rally tires but I havent found info as to what wheel size they are.

Another option is to use the optional wide GP-10 bumper.

By the way, there's an official Kyosho Calsonic Skyline on the Lazer Sport chassis (kelron chassis plates).
