RC1 vs. RC2 what´s the difference?

Post by V12 »

This time not going for the 1/8 thread.
What´s the difference between RC1 and RC2 1/8 car? Was the RC2 released later or is it a different version of the RC1?
Can´t find anything on this.

After reading trough old pricelist (thanks Al) I found out now what´s the difference. Actually RC1 and RC2 are the same car, the difference is just rear axle and motor mount. The RC1 is using an onepiece unit where the RC2 is using four parts. The RC2 parts were easier to make but alignment was much more critical.

Well not exactly.... The original rc1 or more correctly the morrissey special had separate rear axel mounts that were aluminum and then stamped steal also double stamped steel motor mounts. The progression and updating of parts for the rc1 was very fast in the beginning. The same goes for the front end and wheels to match, not many people know but I will let the cat out of the bag ,there is actually four versions of the rc1 front wheel that eventually became the rc100 and rc200 front wheels. Also two different materials.......... Well I could go on forever but the skinny is the rc2 is a rc1 with early version parts they could have just called it the early rc1 and the one with the new parts the rc2. Also the the original flywheel was black anodized steel(very heavy) and spur gears were black.

This is interesting informations, thanks. What are the differences on front end and wheels? The problem is there are no early catalog available for checking and it seems now newer catalog is not showing the correct informations or parts. Trying to show some of my wheels later.

So the morrissey special maybe was the prototype then? Not the RC1 first version production car?

Do you know when the first Associated lexan bodies were introduced? Is the Porsche 917K Coupe the first of their bodies or maybe more the McLaren M20? I really like the 917K and glad I found one. Don´t know if there had been other versions than the one sold (but not made) by Associated.

Yes they were raced as the morrissey special before they were sold as the Rc1 by the Balnel racing team at the series 70 race in St Louis 1971. The first bodies were made by Jim Kirby before associated began making there own bodies, the fist bodies were the TI-22 the Gurney Eagle and the lotus 72. The wheels well I would have to talk on the phone to explain as my fingers might cramp up  feel free anyone to pm me your number and I can explain!

Ohh there's also three different chassis. The original chassis is 4"x16" with the rear axle mounts all the way back and three different front end holes for different wheel base settings with the wing mounts in front of the rear axel. The second chassis came 1" shorter with a space behind the rear axel for wing mounts and fuel tank mounting, also the front end was pre drilled for front bumper. The final version has only one set of holes behind the rear axel for new aluminium wing mounts that also hold on aluminum fuel tank mount the front axel only has one set of holes and there is also the addition of pre drilled holes for access to the motor mount screws under the chassis!!
