grease in transmission?

Post by rcdaddy »

Quick question, normally I run a thin layer of Tamiya ceramic grease on the gears in transmissions. When I opened the trans on my XX it was bone dry and clean.
Should I leave it dry, run light grease, or use some other oil? Let me know what you use. Randy.

I never used grease in any gears in any transmission so my XX too was dry, smooth and never had problems with gears.

on tamiya's a thin layer of grease is ok but on these cars it will cause more harm then good.

Ok thanks guys. So its diff lube on the diff, black grease on the thrust bearing, and everything else dry.

I used to run a tiny bit of Aerocar Technologies gear lube on the stock 48P and Thorp 64P gears in my XX tranny when I raced carpet oval. I used to rebuild/clean it every few weeks and it was always smooth and looked clean.

I've never applied any sort of lubrication to the transmission gears in the gearbox apart from where the XX manual specifically states where you should, i.e. diff rings, bearings and thrust assembly. And then I've always kept lubrication to a minimum and removed any excess that can be wiped away after full diff assembly/rebuild.

As we all know, grease of any sort attracts dirt, dust and small particles and before you know it......you got the perfect grinding paste...... so, in this instance, less is definitely more. :)

Plastic gears + grease = bad

except what kaiser said. Tamiya is OK. In fact I think they recommend it. Dont know about the newer Tamiya buggies though.
