I've always greased the plastic & or metal gears within the gearbox case of all my R/C cars (unless belt driven) - ever since my first Tamiya Hornet - through to my current 2wd off road racer.
But I know not everyone does & indeed it is not usually called for within the instruction manuals, I do remember that Losi recommended using a spot of grease if you used the Aluminium layshaft on a XX - but the instructions for the trans in my current XXX CR2 doesn't indicate lubrication despite using the same top-shaft
What do you guys do? - & if you use grease, what kind is recommended?
Transmission gears - to grease or not?
Re: Transmission gears - to grease or not?
i run'em dry. silicone in the diff, black grease in the thrust. thats it.
i do lube tamiya's with teflon though.

This is what I do as well. Most kits I've assembled had instructions stating not to lube gears. I could swear the XX was one of those (didnt they all come with a metal gear on the top shaft?)?kaiser wrote:i run'em dry. silicone in the diff, black grease in the thrust. thats it.

Thanks for your input guys..... the standard layshaft gear in a XX was steel but the lightweight option part was aluminium... it was with this shaft that you got a small addendum sheet with a recommendation to grease the ali gear.
I've never had any transmission issues running 'greased' gears & I wonder if it helps preserve the lifespan of them? But over the weekend I was reading the original manual for the JRX2 where it specifically mentions not to get any of the diff grease onto the teeth of the gear.... so it kinda got me thinking!

I believe the stealth is what they call self lubricating and does not need lubrication( gears to gears), lubrication can induce "bind" during free wheel.
Personally i dont put grease onto my tranny only to bevel grears.
