48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
First question, if I picked up the idlers, how long would it take to source the outdrive gears and top shaft gears? Just looking for a ballpark guess. Am I looking at 6 months, 2 years, NEVER? Which peices seem to be the rarest - top, idlers, or outdrives. Are the two top gears packaged together and the outdrive gears packaged together, or were they separately packaged?
Also, did Robinson make one besides Thorp? And if so, are the parts compatible?
THANKS!!

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
they pop up now and then. just put it in your searches on egay. you'll probably come across the whole kit first than the seperate pieces.
both top gears are packaged seperately. the drive gears are packaged in a pair. the idlers, that you have, are packaged in a pair as well(with 6 screws).
for robinson, are you talking about a 48p gear set as well?

Sounds good Vette, I'll keep watching. And yes, I was asking if Robinson also made a 48p conversion.
Thanks

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
on the robinson they didn't make a set. but something keeps telling me there was someone else that made them as well. just can't put a finger on it. thorp also made a 64p gear set for the stealth.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
robinson made a 64p set for the stealth. not a 48p for the 6 gear.
i think race master made 48p delrin idlers to use in conjuction with the thorp 48p parts. but i can't remember anyone else other than thorp making a 48p set for the 6 gear.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
Funny you guys are talking about this, I still have my own 48p 6 gear transmission that I used to race before the stealth came out, and on the outside I have the Jammin Products diff tube and diff washers. Parma diff cover with red plug rounds out this transmission.
This transmission and differential that I actually raced for some years back then when it first came out, is still to this day very smooth!
Anyone know what year those 48P Thorp gears came out?

i would probably say at the beginning of the 1990's. maybe late 89'? i'll rome through the rcca mags and check it out.
is there anything you could share on how you guys built your trannies? any tips?

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
This is a timely subject because I have a complete Thorp 48p set of gears ready to go into a shelfer/light use runner with an anodized red tub. I just need to locate a decent (not beat, but not perfect) 6 gear for the conversion with a black case.
I was planning to do the 6-gear outdrive bearing modifications at the same time to make it a super smooth tranny.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
the 48 pitch gears are pretty good. not much needed to do with them other than good bearings(good being relative)
you could do the bearing delete mod for the outdrive gears. there are some threads here about the article from rcca.
it involves a small brass spacer that fits over the OD of the outdrive, to fill in the space between the out drive bearing and gear, so you can delete the inner outdrive bearing.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
Following up on this, I finished the mod and I'm so far not floored by the results. I'll need to run the car and see what I think, but there sure isn't a long, long period of momentum after spinning the wheels. Maybe 2 seconds is what I'm getting. I also used the Losi diff tube with bearing on mine.jwscab wrote:the 48 pitch gears are pretty good. not much needed to do with them other than good bearings(good being relative)

I think the Thorpe gears are probably worth it, the outdrive mod and inner bearing delete, not-so-much.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
I've never used the 48p gears (although I had a NIP that I sold on here a couple of years ago), but I put the large outdrive bearings in essentially all my 6 gear trans. I'm a fan because of the support they add to the outdrives. Plus, the eliminate those damn felt seals
. In any case, besides using the spacers, I've found the key to sucessfully using the large bearings is to have everthing lined up well. Sometimes the case or the spline plate has to be modified slightly to make sure the center of the outdrives matches the center of the bearing. If you do that, the trans will spin free. My 6 gear trans spin nearly as freely as my stealth trans do.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
yeah, the larger outboard bearing should do a few things to benefit the trans
no damn felt seal, as mentioned
provides better load support for the outdrive, which should improve any binding
the larger bearing should last longer, and should make the internal bearing last longer due to spreading the load over more width
most of the sealed bearings have a little drag due to the seal, so that could affect how 'free' it feels.

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
my opinion on 6 gears.. outboard bearing "should" be use in any 6gear that is going to be run..
outboard bearing "must" be run on 48 pitch 6 gear.. 6gear without outboard bearings have a little play in the outdrive.. with 32pitch its almost ok with 32 pitch its not..you will strip out idler gears..i know cause ive done it.. then the 48 pitch idler set cost as much as 4, 32 pitch idler sets.. thats why i got rid of the 2, 48 pitch 6 gears transmissions i had.. id check ebay for a full set of gears.. buying them 1 piece at a time can cost more then a stealth..

Re: 48p 6 gear Conversion Questions
Pardon the thread resurrection. I have a 48 pitch conversion on my old six gear and the diff is not staying set, it gets loose fast. So i am looking for some instructions because I think I may have got the order wrong when I just rebuilt it - if somebody could snap a pic of what they have and post it back here I would greatly appreciate it.
