SG COYOTE 4WD FINALY FINISHED!!!

With thanks to a good friend of mine in Melbourne I now have the majority of a 4WD Coyote.

These cars in stock form can take a little work to get going and this car is an early start to what I think will be a cool project from yesteryear.

My old school friend back in the late 80's had 2 of these 4WD cars and while they always looked imaculate they were terrible to drive. The plastic gears in the diffs were a real let down and nothing could be done to make them work. Thankfully when I was offered 2 used 2WD cars they both have the metal internal gears which will save the day as far as running this car will go.

The day after I received the two cars I feverishly started pulling them apart and began to build up one decent 4WD from the parts. This is where I have gotten up to so far. Will most likely get this car running for a vintage race meeting in the future.

Gary the front and rear gearbox housings are the same.

Also yet to fabricate a centre drive shaft.

Sorry for re-starting such an old thread. I also like he Coyote a lot for the same reason Jason likes it (for its overall visual appearance). As far as I know the car was Italian Champion in 1987 and two of the SG works drivers namely Marco de Marchi and Umberto Pernice placed high in the B-final in the 1987 off-road worlds in Romsey, England. In fact Marco de Marchi missed the A-final by 0.45 seconds. So the car was very capable fitted with metal gears and in the hands of the right drivers.

Helious I think the car is more than capable of some good performance with the right kind of attention to detail.

I have since bought a NIB kit and built up a new car. I had to source a main prop shaft (thank you Bugle ) who also helped me adapt a spur gear hub to allow the use of 48dp spur gears. I polished up the dampers (and pistons) to get a very smooth action.
I'm still not completely sold on the dampers though as I dont think the little ball cups that hold them would need much persuasion to pop off out on the race track.
Still, I really love these cars. There's just something special about them.

Wow that was a quick reply! Box and content of your NIB car looks very cool . Congrats! It seems that you put a great amount of work and tricked out bits and pieces into your 4WD Coyote! Will you run your car (as you did with most cars) once completely finished (I hope not)?

I'll have to update this thread with some new pics of my work in progress next time I have it out.

There was a time when I had plenty of 'free time' to enjoy many of my vintage cars at various tracks on the eastern side of Australia but starting a family has stolen a lot of that time away now days. Having a little boy who damands much of my time kind of gets in the way of what used to be.
Saying this, he will grow up before I know it and he'll be wanting me to take him to the track (and mum will want him out of her hair) before too long.

To answer your question, yes this car has been built with the intention to drive it on the track (not one of those motocross styled tracks though-LOL). The aim is to have it circulating around, get some nice action shots and enjoy it for what it is.

Maybe it's just the box art that I find so fetching? What ever happened to those sweet looking gold dampers shown on the box? The ones that come with the car aren't anywhere near as nice.

I have always loved the SG COYOTE cars, two 4wd's and a 2wd, I used to have 3 of them back in the early 90's, got them in some kind of trade, I wish i still had them lol, Back then i did not have a battery setup that would work with them to they got mutilated lol, I remember running the tires on an old Grasshopper lol, I ran the crap out of that Tamiya lol

I agree the shock that the kit includes are less then desirable, The car design was simple and neat from what i remember about the cars.

Snapped a few pics today of where this project is up to. Really there's little to stop me from adding radio gear now but all of my batteries are still in storage a state away

Thomas (aka-Bugle) was kind enough to help me with the fabrication of a prop shaft and drilled out the centre of a spare alloy spur hub (thanks mate ).

Still yet to decide on a paint scheme but I definately want some kind of box art style.

These cars are really interesting. How does the suspension do with the shocks at such an angle? It reminds me of the front of an Optima.

Very nice pics of your built car Jason! As you said a box-art like paint scheme would suit the car perfectly! I can understand you that you want to try out how this car handles on a track but I am always worried that such a nice and rare car will accidentally get damaged by running it. The propshaft "Mr. Bugle" produced is a work of art (much nicer than the original). Without looking but out of memory I think Thomas is the magician who converted a B3 into 4WD?
