Brushless Timing Questions

Having just purchased my first brushless motor, I have some questions about timing.

Is it basically like automotive timing where it can be both advanced and retarded? I've fiddled with the adjustable timing gear and distributor timing on my Honda Civic and have it advanced to get the right power with my dual carb setup. My Orion motor and ESC only seem to advance the timing.

What timing do some of you guys run on your motors? Does it make a huge difference in the powerband and reduce/increase battery life and/or temps?

It depends on a a few things i suppose. When i'm running a 7.5 in my 2WD i run a little timing, 10 degrees usually, up to a max of 15. This is just to take the edge off the bottom end torque. Basically more timing equals more rpm but less torque.

When i'm running 4WD i run a 5.5 with 0 timing because i can put the power down easier.

The more timing you run the more you have to watch your temps.

I have a TrakPower 4800 20C saddle LiPo, Orion 18T carbon motor (3000Kv), and Orion Experience ESC (70A continuous, 360A peak) that uses an external programmer box to change the timing. It's nothing crazy and I'll maybe race a few times this year at a not-so-local outdoor track. So I'm just wondering if the timing is worth adjusting. I never had a mod brushed motor with adjustable timing, so this brushless stuff seems like witchcraft.
