Alternative For 2" Buggy Rear Tires

Post by LTO_Dave »

Since it seems like the world has moved forward to nothing but 2.2" wheels and tires for buggies, I needed to find some readily-available 2" rear tires to keep my RC10 running.

I had a pair of Losi LOSB0982 Mini-Kingpins for an 1/18 Mini LST that I was trying to sell for my friend. After removing my nearly-bald AE TQ-20's, I put the Losi tires and foams on my 2" rear wheels and they fit like a glove.

So this opens up a world of possibilities since these tires are still available...and they're cheaper than 1/10 2" rear tires.

The outside diameter of the Mini-Kingpins is about 3 1/8" and the width is about 1 3/4".

Nice, those would maybe work on vintage Kyosho rims too, the outside diameter is good...but they're just about a quarter-inch too wide, so that might pose a problem for some rims. Most Kyosho rims take tires that are 35 to 39mm or so wide, while these are almost 45mm. I don't suppose you have a Kyosho wheel to try this out on?

I've been wanting to try the tires from the 1/14 Losi Mini 8ight buggy but Losi doesn't seem to sell the tires separate from the wheels...though you can buy the wheels without the tires :?:

Supposedly the Mini 8ight wheels are the same diameter as standard touring car wheels.

What dimensions are you looking for? I don't have any 1/18 wheels to measure if that's what you need.

Here ya go. I mounted one on my Slingshot wide rear wheel and it fits. The two wheel halves need to be pressed together a little which causes the tire to baloon slightly, but nothing major. I didn't try one on a narrow front wheel, but I think it would be balooned even more than the rears and may look goofy.

Looks like a pretty good fit, thanks for that test. Nowadays, I swap out the Kyosho tire inner plastic rings for foams, I find they make the tire more consistently firmer than those flat rings did, and might help spread out the tire to make it less rounded, too.

So, I wonder if other tires for the Mini-LST and LST2 would fit the same way, such as LOSB0981 or LOSB0984? I like the aggressive tread patterns on those. The second one might even work quite well in loose dirt & sand.
