My Old is sorta New Ultima

Post by adam lancia »

I've had this chassis for more than 15 years. I bought it from a fellow racer who had upgraded the gears to 48p as well as Pro XL front arms and Triumph rear arms. I forget exactly how it looked back then but here is how it looks now. I finally got my hands on a Lethal Weapon II from Daryl (thanks for finally giving me the option to have a great differential in my Ultima!), I came across the shock towers at some point in the last 10 years, don't ask me where or how though  MIP hard shock bodies (.71 up front, 1.32 in the rear), MIP ballcranks are on there now but I've got a set of the blue Kyosho bellcranks on the way (thanks jamin!). Not only did I steal RC10 shocks for my build, I also stole the rear chassis shape to mimic Masami's worlds chassis. That part of the chassis is totally unused and gets in the way of the arms when you run more than normal droop. I forget who makes the spur, I put it on because it just looks right for the time frame. I secured the LiPo's with a left over T4 battery strap (shortened), a chunk of 3mm Team Cobra graphite plate and a broken then cut-in-half Kyosho Lazer shock tower mount. Strangely enough the conglomerate of parts worked out really well.

Anyhow, here are the pics  8)

Nice creative thing you've got going!
I got started on something similar for the MMV challenge, but then decided to enter a vintage race and returned to a more classic build.
Your spur is a parma item. The one I got came with a little tree with neon green spur-adapters for the JRx-2, optima mid and ??? I've seen some recntly in a LHS, but think they were 64dp and didn't seem to contain those adapters anymore.

Personally I find the slipper unit on the A&L a larger advantage than it's ball-diff. Probably 'cause I prefer geardiffs

The advantage of the slipper goes without saying! I'm not the biggest fan of gears diffs that can't be sealed in order to fill them with silicone, I just find them tricky to work with.

I've got a 2 Protec and a Viper, all in Canada though. It'll have to sit around naked until at least January or so. Although I did see mention of a Losi body that Daryl still have in stock. I'm going to have to ask him about that and get some rough measurements. I've definitely have nothing against a Pro XL body but that'll have to wait until funds are replenished,

I wouldn't go for the pro XL (which is by the way no diferent from a normal pro  ). I think it would be too wide for a modern buggy. Pro-X , yes, XX, Evader, GV2 , umltima RB,... just a couple ideas

You're definitely the guy to ask when it comes to mixing and matching Erik, no question about that. Thanks!

P.S. Do you still have that Triumph body laying around?

I would stay away from the standard Ultima body like Erik suggested. It just doesn't fit right. I say go crazy and see what else you can get on there. :)

I do, but I also got a triumph now which will be finished... some day.
I think TBG does a repro though.

I'll be the last person to buy a body from TBG, just too many things about their practices and quality that run me the wrong way.

It's good to hear that you have a Triumph now, hope to see it soon ;)

Use the Associated body if you must, but it does end up looking like just another RC10  I'm kidding. I build on a budget, but the one thing I feel like I have to spring for is a repro body. In the end that's what gives it the look of the original. I went with an Optima Pro on my Ultima Pro, and think it look sweet. Marwan probably does them...but Idon't know for sure.

That's not a bad idea iwth the Optima bodies since they were also rear motored. I'll have to check chassis lengths but it looks like it should work out. Thanks!

That's a great looking Ultima, Adam. I especially like the saddle configuration. I have those same batteries. (nothing like a little bling!)

The Optima Pro is a fantastic body. I used an Outrage body. I don't think it gets any props since it was on an entry level buggy.
