Hi Hcp22 and everyone!

I've been following this one for a little while. I've dug up my 1987 vintage Turbo Scorpion and I'm restoring it at the moment... and adding the odd improvement. I'll create a thread showing the build when I'm further into it.

At the moment I'm keen to incorporate a CRP 1703 sway bar, like the one on the first page of this thread. Unfortunately they seem to fetch silly money on eBay (over US$100 for the last one), so I'm thinking of making my own with some brass tube, piano wire and a wire bender. I don't mind paying good money for the rear cv joints/axles etc. because I'd find it hard to make them bit $100 for such a simple items seems a bit much.

Hcp22 - if you don't mind, could you please measure the outside diameter of the brass tube and the sway bar 'wire'? A ruler would do but calipers would be great. The look to be roughly 4mm and 3mm diameter.

Any help would be great!!!

Cheers!

Mike

Hi Mike
Yes I saw that sway bar… $112.50 …. And I think they cost around $8 back then.
The tube is 82.35mm long and 3.17 in diameter. The sway bar is 1.95 in diameter. I hope that the pictures will help you to and if you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask and will answer if I can.

Hi Lars,

That's fantastic - thankyou very much! I'll have a crack at it once I've got the car together, but in the meantime that'll help me to get the materials that I need.

Cheers mate!

That sounds exactly like a 1/8" brass tube. The brass tubes that show up on hobby websites are either K&S brand or Albion Alloys and have a 0.014" (0.355mm) wall thickness, which gives an internal diameter of 2.465mm. With a 1.95mm piece of music/piano wire inserted into the tube, that leaves a 'gap' of approximately 0.5mm between the wire and tube. Does that seem about right? Does the wire in your sway bar fit really 'snugly' or is there a tiny gap between the wire and tube?

Thanks for putting the ruler next to the straight lengths of the bar as well - that will be very handy.

:D

I will say that are some rom between the wire and tube and 0.5mm sounds just right!

Pretty cool mod... is the motor guard also aluminum? Don't think I've seen those before. Where's liquorbox??? He had a boatload of the circuit buggies.

Yes it’s rare, I haven’t seen it before, it might be home made. It’s protecting one of the weakest part of the Scorpion, the frame bars tend to bend just in front of the plastic radio tube when you crash heavily. The rear shock tower is most likely from Parma , but I don’t have a clue about the shocks. The rear motor guard looks like it came from a Tamiya along with the wheels. I like you to post a few more pictures on your Scorpion; I’m a sucker for Scorpion hop-ups :D

That buggy is currently on eBay. Its front brace mod is pretty cool but I question its effectiveness since it attaches to the thin plastic front of the radio tub/box that was never meant to support anything. It would be much better if it mounted to the shock towers at least.

The seller spelled Scorpion wrong which is why it can't be found that way. I only came across it since it has vintage in the title.

Thanks! I’m a bit interested to bid on that car, I will ask him if he can consider to ship to Sweden.

I paid $10 for it in 1995. I guess it went up a bit in value.

Yeah I agree, the Optima has the same weakness at the front, always bending or even folding up the chin skidplate. Pargu sells an aluminum "upgrade" bumper brace for it, but it merely bolts onto the plastic gearbox. Those braces are probably good for a shelfer but might cause more problems than they fix if used on a runner.
