Quick shock question "HELP!!!"

Post by PBR Allstar »

I'm trying to put together the shocks for my 10T which are original team type dark coated shocks. I'm using the black plastic caps on them because the original aluminum ones are pretty roached. I tried putting them together with the o-rings for the aluminum caps and they squeeze out the sides when I tighten the cap, without an o-ring they leak terribly. What O-rings am I supposed to use for this setup? Part Number?

thanks,
ford.

the black rubber o-rings are all the same. it sounds like your tightening the cap down too much.

no worries smoke. I've never used bladders in assc. shocks, but I have bladders in my 3R mini t shocks and they seem to work quite well. Back to my oring issues, I put the O rings on and just snuged the cap slightly by hand 'til they contacted the ring, and I used my finger nail to push the o rings in as the wanted to squish out the sides as I tightened them down. This seemed to work okay, and they are not leaking, but I still think they seemed a bit loose? I'm not sure what part number they were, i think I tossed the packaging but does AE even make different sizes?

ae shocks are suppose to mix the oil with the air.

pbr make sure you arent filling up the shocks too much and not giving the air enough room to compress when you are tightening down the shocks.

what i do sometimes when i forget how far to fill a shock is fill it with oil, then put the cap on loose enough so i can compress the shock and squeeze the oil through the threads that the shock shaft and piston displaces. then extend the shock to pull in air and tighten the cap and see if the shock feels right.

hoop, I understand that the AE shocks are an aeration type of damper, but the problem I was having was the actual O-ring not seating right and wanting to squish out when I tightened the cap, rather than sit down in the corner under the threads getting captured by the cap. It also seemed that the orings I took off the dampers when I took them apart were very tight, much tighter than the new ones I got. I was just thinking maybe they were differnt for the plastic caps, or maybe I grabed some that were for TC dampers (I don't know if those are different or not) But I think I have it sorted out,, I left the chassis on it's side to see if they leak overnight or not.

Hey PBR, I've had this problem before with various associated shock caps too. Is this happenning with all your plastic caps or just one or two? How about when you put the cap on another shock? Sometimes the caps are molded with a tad too much plastic on the bottom edge of the cap. All you need to do is scrap a bite of plastic off the bottom of the cap on the inside, creating a slight taper to better seat the o-ring on top. Hopefully I explained this ok.
