Another Pro Radiant

Post by Bimdapogs »

Picked this Pro Radiant up this morning. 8) Wasn't really that interested in it when the seller put it up for sale 2 weeks ago. But while searching for Kyoshos in the local classifieds, the ad for this car keeps on popping up as the seller also had a Lazer. Okay, so I did some browsing on TC and on here and found Bormac's boxart Boost. Wow! That one was done really well! And I thought I recognized the body! An unpainted body I got from another deal turns out to be for the Boost/Pro Radiant! Perfect, I'll paint up the body similar to Bormac's boost, and mount it to this Radiant.

I admit, being a big fan of Kyosho, I had a hard time choosing between this and the Lazer ZX.

It has the saddle pack chassis and sway bar kit

As you may have already noticed, this Radiant was modified. It has UJs on all 4 corners. Looks to be RC10 UJs. The rears for sure, and even has RC10 hubs.

The package came with nice (!!!!!) extras, 2 pairs of Losi X-Patterns and a few motors:

Nice catch, if you want to re build back to the original you can get the parts of ebay also you should send those decals to Mrlexan so hey can make repro before you decide to use them you made a good choose the lazer you can always find later but the pro only rarely comes around and usually with a hefty price tag

It would be REALLY nice if you would send the decals for reproduction. The sheet and the white Race Prep box decal that you have. That's the decal I used to cut and put on the hood of my cars.

For sure I can do that, if there aren't repros of this set in the market yet. I thought Willy Chang has them repro'd.

Let's see if Mr.L would be interested.

Thanks, Doug. I took your advice on the motors. They really look amazing, I bring them out from time to time and just stare at them.

Anybody have a spare pair of rear arms (the ones I got were modded), and a pair of dogbones and rear axles? I think all I need to do is clean her up and replace the mods with stock parts. It's in pretty good condition.

Thanks, I've seen those but I don't need 90+% of the parts that are in the lot.

Are those white parts genuine? Or are they "stock" for the Boost?

Yes they are stock parts for the Pro Radiant or the Boost the white parts just need to be dyed. Unfortunetly you may have a tougher time finding only a couple arms so I would get them well you can your Pro would be worth more stock then with the modified arms that you have on it now

I always wondered why the front tower on my Radiant have this exact setup. My first thought was that the original 2 holes might have been cracked or something.

Reading the same thread, the front UJs might actually be Kyoshos, with the lock nut as a hint.

I guess I'll just clean her up and leave the trick mods as they are. The only thing that bothers me is the hack job on the rear arms, which could have been done carefully, at least on the second set of arms. :?
JHarris wrote:After posting the pictures of Mike's Pro Radiant from the 1989 worlds he and I had a conversation about the observations all of you made and some of the other modifications. Mike's car was equipped with a modified front shock tower that increased the suspension function. Here's his explanation of what he did and it's function. This is a cut/paste from 2 different emails so if it seems a little broken, that's the reason.

Kinda surprised nobody noticed the pivoting front tower on my Pro Radiant. They spotted everything else. The front tower was nicked named the "flippity flop" (not by me). I also used one on my Kyosho Laser. It had limit stops on it. The RCCA article should show pics of that.

I did have a special slipper clutch on the car. Not sure where it went.

We drilled an additional3mm hole between the two original mounting holes of the tower and bulkhead. It pivoted off this hole. We shaped the bottom of the tower like a slight "V" to allow it to pivot and this surface acted like limit stops.

The trick to any 4 wd drive car is to never loose front drive while cornering. So if the inside tire lifts from the ground then you have just a 2wd car at that point. This is why the mono shock worked so well. Problem with the mono shock is you had the dampening and spring of only one shock for both wheels. Our system was the best of both worlds. We used a small sway bar to keep it centered and keep it from waundering.
