What Paint for refinishing chassis plate?
For those of us who are airbrush challenged, What spray paint is advised for refinishing a losi chassis plate?I'm looking to spray just plain black onto the black chassis.
Satin, or flat? brand? do I need a primer first?
I have a jrx-2 chassis that I've sanded and filled in the excess holes with jbweld, just need to sand one more time and paint.
Thanks

I have some rattle can epoxy paint that seems pretty tough. it's called roll-bar paint, and it's a satin type finish. I like the way it came out on a blue eagle chassis I have. VHT maybe? I can't remember.

Are you trying to make it look as close to original as possible or do you want a nice clean black plate? Runner or shelfer?
I have done some wet sanding on an AE plate and then sprayed clear with mixed results. I have better results with hobby grade model paint, seems to have a much finer spray.

Re: What Paint for refinishing chassis plate?
I'm looking to restore it for a shelfer, If it was a runner I would just run it as is.
I'd like to get a stock look. sanding and clear won't do as I have numerous holes filled with grey material. I'll give the satin black a try, see what I can find locally.
Thanks for the info guys.

Sherwin Williams industrial and marine coatings. Very good spray paint. available at a sherwin williams store. I used it on a houge chassis and came out sweet. The can has one of those nice spray nozzles also.

There is also a good automotive trim paint in the big can. I think that they have different blacks - SEM Products inc 800.831.1122

A note on satin finishes. You have to make sure the chassis is perfect with a satin finish because the imperfections will show badly. A flat finish is much more forgiving. I got a nice finish by spraying a flat black then hitting it again with a clear matte finish.

I found that Plasti-Kote Bumper Color looks really good. Its a paint for bumper and trim plastic.

Re: What Paint for refinishing chassis plate?
thanks for all the info guys. I wound up going with dupli-color flat black. I picked this because they had a matching sandable fast dry primer, that filled in a lot of the imperfections well.
Here are a couple shots of the chassis. The one I painted had about 5 extra holes drilled which I filled with JB weld. I applied 3 coats of primer to the bottom, sanding most of it off between coats. This filled in all but the deepest grooves. Then I sprayed a few coats of the flat black, sanding before the final coat. I then used a countersink to clean out and slightly deepen the holes on the bottom. I think it looks pretty good, satin/semigloss would have been too shiny.
This plate started out looking like the used one pictured.
