a question about polishing (steel?) parts that have grayed

I did a search on this question and found threads that were mostly talking about removing anodizing, which isn't exactly what I'm looking to do. I'd like to just take some of the (steel?) parts like the dogbones and transmission outdrives and just get them nice and clean and looking new-ish. Right now they are just this spotty-grayish color, and I've seen where others have really cleaned/shined some of these parts up (using a dremel?). I don't have a dremel, so I'm hoping there is just some polish and/or cleaning agents I need.... I'm wondering if I just need easy-off and some kind of polish? I'm just not completely sure though. Any recommendations?

soak them in wd40 and use wire brush is probably the best way to clean steel parts but as soon as you get them shiny they will rust.

I'd invest in a dremel. some models are very reasonably priced and you can do so much with them. After you get the parts clean and smotth you could use a gun blueing kit to recolor and protect the parts. I've seen this mentioned somewhere here before but i haven't tried it yet.

I just finished cleaning an outdrive for a stealth transmission using Eagle One Never Dull. Looks almost new

if you can spin it in a drill, you can use scotchbrite, which will put a fantastic shine on it.

you can also use the scotchbrite by hand, but it takes longer.

otherwise, a bunch of polishing dremel attachements will get you what you need. felt points, flap discs, wire wheel, etc.

I'm really interesting in that gun blueing kit, I'll have to check that out. might just be what i'm looking for.....
