Post by tjf »

Hi all

I'm back here again after regretably selling my worlds RC10 last year. I have just aquired an old 6 gear. Whats diff parts and gearbox parts like to get hold of nowadays as I'd like to give it a decent rebuild?

Thanks

Most six gear part can be found on Ebay, I have a small store on Ebay and do have some parts for the six gear trans. You can check out my store at the link below. If you can't find what your looking for PM me.
The best thing to do is to open it up and give the gears a good cleaning, you may nat need much.

Hello there,

New to this forum and I searched through various threads and did not find any recent topic on this.. so it must be buried...

I picked up a Gold Tub car recently on ebay. Car is very clean, however transmission was very dry and has some rust. I put the gears in a mixture of alcohol and WD40 to clean them up. The grime has come off but the rust is still there.

So I was thinking of dipping the gears in soda water to let the sodium benzonate clean it. Otherwise was going to buff the gears with using a rotating buff wheel.

Any other suggestions for cleaning that I'm over looking would be greatly appreciated.

ON the 6 gear trannys what I have found is the same as what was sudjusted clean it up . BUT you have to check the plactic idler gears. THey may be chip or ever broken that is what I found out to be the weak link in those trannys other then that they were a good tranny from what I use and had seen in the pass. Don your Rustbucket

Thanks for the reply. Came home today and removed gears from mixture, still had rust on it. Fired up the dremel with a steel brush and rust came right off and gears are shiny again. Plastic idle gears are in good condition. The diff pinion gear has markings on it.. i tried to smooth it out with e polishing bit on the dremel. All in all pretty happy with how clean the gears became.

I seem to recall Thorp made the idle gears as well... were they the same pitch or was there need to change out all the gears?

Good morning Raman.

sounds to me your good shape. Just keep an eye on them, When I racing that tranny in the RC gold pan. I had to change out those gears once in a wile . The way to see if your starting to have a problem is if the rear end starts making some strange noises or it it starting to turn strange. That is when you want to tear it down and check it out. FOR THE most part I never had any real problems but I also keap an eye on them. Later I swap out for the stelth. That took care of all of the problems , I still to this day still like the 6 gear. I have been able to buy idler gears once in awile from a older Portland Hobbie shop. YOU can call Assocated to see if you stll get them.
As for the thorp I can not answer you on that one maybe someone elest can. At that time I never look into it . SO sorry I cant help you on that one.

Good morning Rustbucket,

Thanks for the reply. Are parts available for the stealth tranny? I assume I would have to drill some new mounting holes?

Raman funny you ask. I check that out last week, YES you can get everthing , If you were in portland Oregon I couild tell you whear to get the parts and who to talk to but yes they available . Including the case. YES you will have to redrill for the tranny. Other then then that that is it. Except maybe changing sprure gears. GO up to 48 pitch. Get away from the stock 32 pitch white spure.

That figures.. theyre in Oregon LOL.. Hobby stores are like dinosaurs in my area.. extinct.. Actually my 6 gear came with a 48 pitch spur, not 32. Most likely I'll just pick up an extra 6 speed on ebay.. since 2.25 stealths are harder to come by.
