damn you comcast
so i move down to the first floor apt and get my internet transfered. no big deal.
somehow, either the installer or the installation overwrote ALL my browser bookmarks from the past 8 or so years with a corporate "set" of bookmarks like comcast, google, and some others...
this sucks. i had sooooo many little hidden gems bookmarks that i will NEVER find again.

Re: damn you comcast
Been there done that hoop, now I even back up my favorites onto an external drive so I know I have them and have occasionally taken them with on a memory stick just because I can't be bothered trying to remember all the addresses, etc. Comcast is such a loving giant, I hate it every time I have to deal with those people.

Re: damn you comcast
I can't get my work computer (set up with the required military contractor firewall) to work with comcast. I have a ton of stuff I need to do with my laptop from home and I can't do a friggin thing. I have to surf with my wife's HP, but it does me no good with gaining access to the servers at work from home... it doesn't have the security software I need.
I am not here cause I am playing photographer and on my mountain bike.

Look on the bright-side. You'll get the joy of discovering them all over again.

Don't you just love Corporate America forcing their infinite wisdom down your throat by changing your computer settings and other data during updates, installs, etc?

Re: damn you comcast
I have a link I would love to place (here), but out of respect for this site I won't. My town is pretty small so although I hear the name Comcast all the time it means nothing to me. However, if they could get me hi-speed net where I live; SIGN ME UP!Halgar wrote:Don't worry, THEYTOOKMYTHUMB and MrLexan can help you rebuild your porn links.badhoopty wrote:so i move down to the first floor apt and get my internet transfered. no big deal.

that suks hoop, when I moved it took verizon two weeks to test a friggn phone line so I could get my dsl. The phone worked for two weeks but no internet. Then they came out and hooked up the dsl at the pole and disconected the damn phone line, they disabled my modem and couldn't get it to recieve a signal, then sent me another one and had to reprogram something cuz it didn't work when I got it. Talked to India for 2 hrs, then told them to come out and pick up the POS equipment cancel my service and BAM within 5 mins everything worked perfect! Bastards. O and by the way I hate comcast too.

Re: damn you comcast
the thing that really pisses me off is i TOLD the dude not to fiddle with my browser settings when he showed me that comcast was asking to re-configure them. but the little rat bastard did it anyway.

That bites. Have you tried searching for .url files? I think they would still be there, just not loading for some reason. Perhaps the Recycle Bin? Or maybe you can salvage at least recently used ones from the History listing? Good luck.

Re: damn you comcast
History, cookies and saved passwords and prompts are in temp storage so I would expect those to get cleaned but bookmarks as I know them are in the favorites selection at least on windows IE so that is a saved file on your computer which should be there. If you are using windows XP or Vista or any Windows OS then look on your C drive under users, then under your personal id, then under Favorites. That's where your bookmarks are kept and the installer should not have touched anything other than install the software. If you're using a Mac then forget it and none of this is pertinent.

i at least still have all my cookies, but those old bookmarks are long gone... you can actually set up a .mac account and have your preferences be stored & uploaded automatically and updated to all your other macs, but thats just way too techy for me.

Wow, they rip the useful stuff but leave the junk? Incredible. That's on par with the Sony root file fiasco.badhoopty wrote:i at least still have all my cookies, but those old bookmarks are long gone
Wonder if that is something that someone like the Electronic Frontier Foundation or whatever they are called would be interested in helping pursue? Adding their junk is one thing, but removing stuff, damn. Maybe a lost cause, but I know I would at least be whining a storm to comcast.
Re: damn you comcast
I work for Comcast. Actually that's a lie, I am contracted by comcast. I could tell you all different things that you would piss you guys off but that would take too long. For instance they claim that "we installed our fiber optic service years ago." That's not enitrely true, and no the fiber optics do NOT go to your house. The only fiber optic lines that comcast has is for emergency services and hospitals, and ceos. What goes to your house is coax cable. Verizon Fios actually does use fiber all the way to your house.
Badhoopty, When they installed the new service lines they should NOT have installed any software or changed any settings without your permission. They are only supposed to look at the signal quality of the line and that's it. The only time they would need to install software is if you hadn't been using comcast before.
