Pop the ball cup off the servo horn and check for binding, check that the servo saver isn't too loose, then try the servo while the steering is disconnected. This should tell you where the problem is.

Yes they can, if dropped they can break.

You can shake them and listen if you hear what sounds like broken glass inside. Not always can you hear a bad crystal so don't take it as a sure fire way to tell, but can sometimes help quickly diagnose a bad crystal.

I am envious of the 2.4ghz radios without giant telescoping antenna and the receivers with minimal antenna, but not enough to make me change. We've had problems with those "ramps" bending and jamming. For sure take it all apart and check for smooth operation.
