Re: Properly Motivated

I'd like to think I'm motivated, I just lack the time. At least I got one build done this year (Pro Radiant). At this rate, I should be done with all my RC plans in only 20 years! :D

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

I'm not a slot car expert, but I do know that 1:32 is a very common scale. However, I won't be selling any of the parts I'm making; it's just for fun/learning.

I hope to print the whole chassis next week some time...

Thanks, Paul!

Absolutely! When I get this mostly figured out, I plan on releasing the 3D files so others can build on them if they like.

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

Lookin' good! I don't think a straight printed piece will hold up, even with the lattice. Nylon will do beter than fragile ABS, but I still think the rigors of actual use will tear it apart in short order. However, introduce some aluminum braces and reinforcements in the right places,n I think you'...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

Here you go! 1:32 Scale (with 3x wall thickness). Anything smaller would be very tough to print with any detail.

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

Very nice work so far! This is an idea I have that maybe you could bring to life...a tiny 1/64 scale or smaller chassis of your design to use as a keychain, maybe with the site's logo engraved on it? It's possible, although I'd have to fudge the scale for much of the geometry. 1/64 scale would make...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

Great project Robert. You're just a bit ahead of the rubber-band/balsa racer I've been working on. I think a 1/18 RC10 would be a cool project. Maybe steal a transmission from an existing model or go direct drive. Thanks! Well, it is mostly virtual at the moment, so at least that b...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

I'm using a Solidoodle 2, which is a capable (I typically print at 0.3mm resolution...it will go down to 0.1mm if needed), but inexpensive printer. The learning curve was somewhat steep (I'm still learning new things after a year) as the Solidoodle uses all open source software. The printer, softwar...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

I can print with nylon on my printer, but it's more challenging to use than ABS as the nylon absorbs quite a bit of moisture and must be dried prior to use. I may try to order some next week and bake it in one of the lab ovens at around 110 C for a for a day or so. I'll probably make a run with the ...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

The ABS should be strong enough in theory, but an injected molded chassis is stronger than a printed one, so we'll see. The interior lattice helps on stiffness, but not on impact. Many members of The Open RC project use ABS and same type of printer. It seems to be going well for them, althoug...

Re: 3D Printing an RC10 Chassis

Thanks! I thought about the stiffeners too; they could probably run over the top if needed or I can just get out the ol' dremel and make some notches after the fact. :D
