Piece by Piece or Parts lot

Post by H20onfire »

I get this is sort of a "depends situation", but are you more apt to buy piece by piece r/c items or part lots? These would be used items also.

I guess it depends on what you are into...
Some guys do alot of lots, but I think they are either more generalists that could use the stuff or they know where they can offload the things from the lot that they don't need/want.

Some would buy a lot for maybe one or more things in the lot but would have no need for the other items.

Sometimes buying lots sucks you into more projects and the stuff stacks up.

I guess if it's a jumbled pile with one fuzzy picture....beware.. You just need to really want the whole lot or be willing to keep, toss, or sell/trade the rest.

Lots can obviously save you some money in some cases.

I tend to be a specific item or two buyer at a time unless a lot pops up that is almost exclusively parts that I am into. Mainly because I don't want to deal with holding, tossing, or selling the other stuff.
Hope you're doin' something fun.

I will buy a lot of its priced right. i do order a good deal of single parts but only when I have to. I don't resell or do any trading so the lots i buy need to be mostly filled with stuff i will use or want.

All good points. I have been on both sides of that fence. In the past, referring to selling, Ive just usally sold piece by piece and that was ok. (never treated like a business, just hobby)I have also accumulated some lots to finish up some projects. Well now i have a tote of stuff and trying to decide which way to go. To be honest, I'd rather just off the lot an move on.

I think it often depends on the type of builder you are. Some people do a full teardown, and thorough examination of exactly what they have and need. I think it makes sense for these type of builder to buy the specific parts they need. Other builders, like myself, look over the vehicle whole for two minutes and quickly determine the really broken bits, and then dive in. I think parts lots help these people, because they are often going to find more broken than they thought, and the lot(s) will probably be there to support that.

I can't imagine building a vehicle and not having spare parts! Like, you only bought exactly what you needed, and no waste. That seems weird to me. :D
I build RCs like people would have done back in the '90s ..................................... if they had 3D printers.

Sounds like you have an answer. You’ll spend more time and effort to sell by the piece, but likely make more money. Selling by the lot gets you out with less effort.

I’ve not often founds lots I want and can afford

well, part lots will always result in having another car (or more) to complete, without even have a chance to find the rare parts which is broken on each and every model of that car... (That's why I ended with many Hunter and Galaxy initially :-)). I decided I'll complete those with printed parts at the end :-).

But part lots very often cost very much less compared to part by part ultimately... So less fun, more cost... I'm all for lots, personnaly
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)

I scour the net for a particular part if I need it and also look at badly worded listings and generic things and have purchased a lot of items for just one particular thing. It seems to work out well in the long run, but you do get some stinkers from time to time.
