Recommendation Vintage Racer

Post by Synergy »

So I’m wanting to sort a car for next years UK vintage race season. I’m looking for something with plenty of and easy spares availability, it’s kind of leading me down the road of a rere. I’m a bit cold on the Schumacher reres and was wondering about the capability of the kyosho legend series, I’ve got a bit of a fancy for a Javelin.

What do you guys think would meet the criteria and perform reasonably well? The UK vintage racing series seem to be split into year band so the technological advances over time don’t play too big a roll.
Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.

No recommendations?

Well I guess I’ll just find a way to get the old 870C working.

I'd say it depends on how competitive the racing is and how good your driving is

The 're-re' path is definitely a safer bet both from a price, durability and parts availability standpoint. Obvious choices for 2WD would be the RC10 Classic and the Ultima, for 4WD a Turbo Optima kit might be a better option, you could always fit up a roll cage if you like the Javelin look. Optima and Javelin base kits are getting hard to come by, at least in the States. For whatever reason the Turbo Optima is easier to get and has some nice upgrades for a racer.

Post pics once you make you choice and do your build 8)

Kyosho Ultima might be the only available 2WD rere with reasonable parts support... or the Optima rere series as mentioned above if you're interested in 4WD. You could also give a Tamiya Terra Scorcher rere a go in 4WD (or any other kit from the 'shot' series).

Having thought more on the topic and researching a bit deeper I think there is enough spares support for the YZ10/870C to make it viable. Whilst I like the rere ethos I’m starting to think they all leave me a little cold, I don’t think they quite carry the appeal of running a bonafide vintage car.

Good choice :)
I've gone Schumacher in 4WD with a Bosscat and I've already got 2WD and truck covered with a B3 and a T3.
In hind sight I'd have gone Procat or XLS as Bosscat parts are proving hard to find.
