Kyosho Golds for the best vintage shocks. AE's are good too. What about Tamiya's Hi Cap re-release shocks? They're pretty smooth.

My brother reckons the Kyosho Velvets on his RB7 Ultima are excellent. They're big bore though.

Worst shock I've ever built, SG Coyote. Absolute crap. Even original SRB shocks were better and they came out six years earlier.

yes, after thinking about it for .002 seconds this is definitely on my worst shocks list.

I have a coyote as well so ...... Yup not on the list .
I was impressed by the CAT XLS shocks but I can only find them in pieces but I may go that way ...... Still not sure .

Traxxas gold/blue and Traxxas HA/TC TRX-1/Blue Eagle/LS series.

I love those PITA bottom-loaders! .....picking over that "C" clip and not marring the body....a good challenge...

Although getting consistent pressures and messing with the bladders/bleeding was an "issue". But that's an argument for "easiest shocks" to work with. In that case, we could go with spring shocks as the winner.
Hope you're doin' something fun.

My favorite shocks of all time have to be the 12mm Associated shocks, specifically from the B6 / T6 / SC6 series. Just installed a set of the B6 shocks on my ReReworlds and they're amazing!

I haven't had many performance shocks over the years. I can rank the shocks I have used best to worst:

AYK pro radiant-built well, butter smooth, easy to bleed
Traxxas/associated bottom load shocks-about equivalent, big difference is shock bladder. very good.
associated top load shocks-about the same as above. finicky with getting the seals snapped in place makes then slightly less better
team losi shocks-various cartridges-some great some not so great. MIP rebuildable ones made shocks 8)
tamiya cva-surprisingly smooth
duratax gold-got em new, did not have any issue with them. seemed to work fine.
yokomo 870c-bleed OK, but wacky design and they weren't fresh when i got them, seemed leaky and inconsistent.
tamiya frog/hornet rear shocks-nothing good to say
aristocraft kangaroo-very much garbage.

What size shocks fit on the classic worlds? Were you able to buy the shocks separate from the kit?

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this - I was able to purchase the full shock set on eBay (believe I paid $100?). They're the B6.2 shocks built per instruction manual. I did get an extended front tower from a guy on eBay as well, but with the stock tower and a few limiter stops on the inside you'd be OK. The fronts are just a smidge too long.

Could anyone confirm whether Kyosho RB7 Big Bore shocks are 13mm? I couldn't find any info on the diameter. Just that they're big bore.

Well obviously I am a Brimod guy, so an easy one for me. Nothing beats their look I don’t think, and the bleed screw and threaded spring adjustment is fantastic. They do leak though (although that problem has now been resolved with a subtle mod).

Somebody above mentioned the AYK Pro Radiant shocks too. A good call. I have found these to be excellent and buttery-smooth.

Back in the day though, I only ever ran Option House Golds. On everything. The first thing I changed on my CAT XL, 870c and my Works 91 were the shocks. For me they were the best available.
CAT SWB&XL, Meteor (x3), RC10 custom, RC10 Graphite, Goldpan, 870c (x2), Works 91, Samurai, Pro Radiant (x2), Mini Mustang&Maxima, Mid Turbo, TOP Hybrid , Coyote, Hot Trick Optima, Supercharge, Brimod, 'Rory Cull' Hotshot, SRB.
