Getting super glue off Carbon?

Post by PBR Allstar »

Recently got a carbon chassis that someone super glued some components to. Chassis is otherwise mint and I’d like to keep it as such, sans the super glue. Any sure fire methods for removal?

Acetone will dissolve crazy glue and not hurt 'most' carbon fiber. Reason I say most is that it has always worked for me, but check a small area first to make sure the carbon fiber won't be harmed. I've never seen a problem on 4 chassis's I have cleaned up.

I’ll experiment today. Why anyone would glue down electronics is beyond me.

I have a Lucas Agitator carbon chassis that had CA glue all over the battery slots cut into the chassis; it's in the manual to do that to prevent electrical conductivity, but it was done very messily--and I wasn't planning on running old-school cells after I was finished resto-modding it, anyway. I put some acetone in a low jar or margarine container, placed the chassis plate on the jar, then put the jar & chassis in a plastic bag and tied it shut, and left it for 24 - 48 hours. No acetone directly touched the chassis plate, but the fumes dissolved or softened up most of the CA, and the rest was easily removed by scraping it off.

I concur with the previous posters on using acetone. A trick I found is to use small strips of cloth moistened with acetone. Don’t oversoak it and the cloth will keep the acetone localized through surface tension. A stronger concentration than fuming and keeps the acetone off of places you don’t want it.

Acetone worked a treat! I used a small piece of cloth about the same size as the Ca spot. Wet it and laid iron top. Softened right up.
