MIP Tranny Info Please

Post by MONSTER »

I have a guy wanting to trade me a MIP Tranny from a 10T, for a T3 almost Roller. My T3 has no electronics or bearings in Hubs or Stealth, and the Stealth is missing Idler Gear and Shaft. Sounds like a decent deal to me, but what do I know? I know absolutely NOTHING about MIP Trannys.

Is it an ok deal?
Will I like the MIP?
Whats different about MIPs? (gearing, yada yada)
Is it "period" for my Buggy or 10T?

The MIP was the aftermarket precursor to the stealth. In nice condition I would say their worth $60-$80 which i think is more than your incomplete T3. I would make the trade. here is one of mine

Which vehicle would it be better suited to?
How about Parts, readily available?
Does the MIP and Stealth share any parts? He mentioned something like that.
Good for a Runner, or too valuable (he says it looks brand new)?
How does gearing compare to Stealth?

MIP made two types of aftermarket transmissions for the RC10. Both were 3-gear trans., but completely different. The one in shodogs sweet ride is the older one and has a black case. It was a complete hopup to the stock 6-gear trans. The newer one has a beige/yellow case and is more similar to an actual associated stealth trans. To me, the older trans is a pain to use, especially if the diff goes bad or wears out. I think you can only use dog bones with it too. With the newer MIP trans, it is essentially a unique clone of the stealth that uses a larger idler gear bringing the overall ratio to 2.61:1 which helps with running hotter motors (versus the stealth's 2.25:1 ratio). It shares the diff gear and top shaft and is probably the one the guy has since he mentioned to you that it shares some stealth internals. The problem with it is that it changes the angle of the motor plate, but is no problem if you run a graphite chassis without the motor guard.

I think "MIP transmission" and "missing parts" pretty much sums up the deal. I'm sure there are others whe know firsthand what that mean$...

I guess Im a little slow this morning, what DOES that mean? With the $ for an s, sounds like you think the MIP is missing parts? (its not)
Or is that the MIP is nice, and my T3 Stealth is missing parts (it is), so the deal should be a "no-brainer"?

I'm the one that's slow...I misread it as missing the idler gear and shaft. My bad.

I have the Tub Chassis', and want to stay that way for these first Vintages. How bad will it change things. I dont want to keep everything all lined up. Any pics of one on Tub, anyone?

Did you follow the link to asso_man's build...? ^ There's a scanned copy of the instructions for the "change box". In the scans archive there should also be the instructions for the older MIP 'box. Even if you don't use the trans on this build it's probably a better investment than a partial T3.

the best bet is to find out which tranny it is. the one like my black one doesn not need any modifications and bolts right on. The one Carloco8 does need you to re drill some hols in your chassis. MIP also made some older trannies

here is the oldest one

Then they came out with a modified one that is laid back. MIP's mount was lame so I used a Hot trick mount

If it wasn't for SRB's there probably would not be an RC10 and this list would have been http://www.RC12talk.com
