Kyosho Tomahawk: “All” carbon fiber runner!

Post by Hcp22 »

This will be my 1000th post at RC10Talk, I don’t know if all of my posts have been meaningful as it states in the BST rules… at least I made 25 meaningful posts sins I have been granted access to BST…
But anyway, this is the first post for a new built runner.

Sins my runner was beaten late last spring in the Swedish vintage race of two Optima’s I have been obsess with the thought to build a lightning fast Tomahawk… at least faster than an Optima, maybe even the MID and Yokomo… no, no, that would be too cocky, I have to settle for those Optima’s…

The simplest way to reach this goal would probably be more track-time for the driver…But that’s much more fun and much more of challenge to go fast with a 28 year’s old Kyosho Tomahawk that are easier to drive than practice; don’t you think?

My goal is to get it reedy to the Swedish vintage race in Mars/April (date not set yet). I hope it will be in April, I think this will take some time; I want it right from the beginning. And as always is all comments welcome.

The base for this Kyosho Tomahawk will be Mr. V’s (RetroMagic) beautiful quilted carbon rails. As long as I have known him, he has always had an urge to manufactory part because he wants to test if it’s doable. Of cause there will be some other nice stuff to in this Kyosho Tomahawk to.

All good... except that stock transmission in the middle ;)
Why don't you try something more efficient for the drive-train?

Well, I have been thinking about that. But that require a mill that I don’t have witch means I have to invest. :( I will try to not use parts that are not made for the Circuit 1000 cars or handmade.
The original gearbox is quite nice if you adjust it right, and I have some thoughts and “surprises” up my sleeve. 8)

Wont be a stock trans once he put that Thorp ball diff in.

Lars, you could also do it up as a Scorpion and make a nice looking faux carbon fiber tub with a hydrodipping/hydrographics diy kit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8wHglTJl6A

Either way should be another sweet build.

That's pretty neat with the water thing. But it's still whatever material underneath.

Looks very promising -

If You open that Thorp bag, You´re allowed to use the std. tranny :-)

I´m hoping for a carbon radio tray and the 12mm red short shocks.

I´ll be watching this!

12mm red shocks... look nice but won't help beating the optimas either.
It think you'll have to do 2 projects Lars: one with your base idea and a second 'what-ever-it-takes' concessions build

The stealth transmission shouldn't really require a mill: The footprint is mall enough to fit the original part of the chassis carrying the stock transmission.

Tip: TLR22 rear wheels fit 12mm hexes and have serious offset. I think you can use them with new style frog axles or the old traxxas TRX1 and 3 slider shafts

Lots of good ideas, and I appreciate them all. Some time I got stuck with an idea and I can’t get it out of my head, then it’s good to have friends that point you in another direction and get’s you out of those ruts!

Tomorrow I will travel down to the country house and hopefully I will be able to make some chassis parts out of that CF sheet and drill some holes in the CF-rails. And If I want to, I can prolong the CF-rails up to 16mm compared to the original rails length. The origina wheel-base is approx 255mm; a modern car is around 270mm. And I have another idea that aloes me to adjust from standard (or the chosen length) to +5-6mm. But I don’t know if I will gain any thing by prolong the CF-rails? So I need some advice guys... :D

Lars, glad you're calling me a friend, and by the way: you spelled Kyosho wrong in your topic title
Another tip:
On my ghostrider I used some different rear-arm carriers: similar to the ones on an rc10. By doing so I can alter the toe-in and lean-in angle of the rear wheels.

Yes I see you as a friend Erik!

If I make this holes a bit oval I will achieve that effect right?

Wow! This will be a great addition to your already superb collection of Circuit 1000 models. I can already taste the challenge against my Optima Mid cf runner that you know about :D

This thread is certainly on my following-list.

Thanks Lars, glad you 're not my enemy

Oval hole :( to difficult to get the set-up symmetrical, and even more difficult to keep it that way when running.

Nah, don't worry about it: the stock set-up was probably tried and proven to be just perfect by the kyosho engineers in their days. So no need to make it adjustable

Guys, I never got any feedback on the wheel base, should I prolong from 255 to 265mm?
