Cougar 2000 question..

Post by Momo5 »

Image
I picked up this Cougar 2000 from RedScampi not too long ago. Its in great shape with a full carbon fiber chassis and top deck. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the telescoping type of driveshafts that came stock on it. Are there any parts still available that would allow me to convert them over so either CVDs or swingshafts?

If not would the driveshafts and diff outdrives from a fireblade fit without modifications?

Thanks!

Yes, there are parts to convert that car to universals. I don't have the numbers, but with a little searching you could find them here or on e-bay. -Jeff

Well the driveshafts cost me more than I expected ($39 with shipping) but I didnt know how rare they were so I bid as much as I had too. Now to keep an eye out for the other part I need.

Personally I wouldn't use the red alloy driveshafts, they tend to bend and get dented easily and are rare. This is why they switched to the plastic telescopic driveshafts AFAIK.

Maybe you should experiment with Fireblade driveshafts or possible shafts from other cars. Or just get used to the plastic telescopic ones which do the job (but where is the fun in that!)

I have Fireblade driveshafts so I can check for you?

Just another question. I can see that the gearbox on a 2000 looks different from a fireblade, but are the gears inside exactly the same?

No there a finer pitch than the fireblade mate, but that doesn't mean you can't use the fireblade gears or vise versa.

Thanks guys for all of your help. I figured I'd share a picture of my Cougar 2000 from 93 or 94 I'm guessing. I'm going to paint the repop body just like this..

I wish i still had a picture of my original race cars. It looks like a 95T body on it, is anyone repro'ing these yet?

When I got this car I noticed that something in tranny wasnt right. Turns out that the diff gear is just spinning. What is the absolute easiest way to remove the telescoping driveshafts? I looked at the instuctions and during assembly I show that you have to use a vice to assemble it....but I have no clue how to take them apart so I can get it out of the transmission housing. I'd REALLY like to not break anything...

Here it is as if now...

You need a pinion key, and the hole in the outdrive is a screw unwind it and pull out the driveshaft.

Just an interesting point to keep in mind with regards to choosing a Lexan shell for this car. It would seem you have a genuine 2000 model and the shell of your old car is that of the 95TEAM car. I tried fitting the 95 shell and undertay to my 2000 and the chassis wouldn't allow fitment of the undertay.
You might want to check this for yourself. I had no idea till I tried it myself and it was a purchase which at that stage was too late.
