Painting a driver

Post by lpddpd »

I just got my first driver (6180). Do I paint him on the outside or the inside? Anyone have pics of their drivers posted?

I have one that was painting by RACER8838. It is painted on the inside with what looks to be enamel paint brushed on. Looks like he painted the black fisrt then the white. Then painted in the rest. Here is a pic. With a steady hand and good brushes should be easy to do.

I have been giving the whole lexan driver painting thing some significant thought recently. Because the driver is not subject to much wear and tear, and because a matte / semi-gloss finish is more desireable for the uniform, I've been thinking of painting the underside in the lightest color in the scheme (e.g. white for a white uniform or helmet), then the outside for the seat, helmet, visor, and details. This way, all contemporary miniature painting techniques including drybrushing and washes will be in play, and the margins between different sections, such as between the harness and uniform, or uniform and helmet, can be "black-lined" with a sharpie or fine paintbrush for a cleaner look.

Makes me say hmm... I was planning on doing a red helmet/black visor with white drive suit as well and that pick is close to what I was thinking of already. I don't have an airbrush so hand brush is what I'll be doing. So I have been experimenting on scrap lexan and discovered that with the Pactra rattle can I can get a matte black finish but with the same black out of a jar painted with a brush or sponge its shiny on the painted side. Anyone know why? Thanks for all the info so far!

I painted this one with all Createx water based paints. I first sprayed all the black from underneath, then painted the helmet underneath so it would be glossy. This was done all with my airbrush. I then painted the outside of the suit with brush so it would be matte. Again all with Createx. I finished it off with a little fine line black detailing with a sharpie. Hope this helps some.
