Motor and gearing recomendation

Post by bennettj325 »

Hey everyone, new guy to the forum. I, like alot of others on this forum found 'the box of parts' from my youth in the basement.

Needless to say I am doing a resto-mod on a gold pan rc-10. The pan was pretty beat so I painted it black and used truck bed liner on the bottom of the pan. All new bearings throughout, everything else is as it was last time i ran it (~1990); except new deans connectors, a modern battery, B2/3 CVD's and 2.2" tires.

Here is my setup:
Novak 610 reversible
6 gear tranny
6 cell 7.2 4600 NiMH
'new' 2.2 tires

I am looking for a recommendation on current motors and some gear combo's. I am not racing, just playing around in the yard. A nice mix of low and top end is my goal.

Also- do motors 'go bad', my Trinity Monster HP from the early 90's is lacking the torque I remembered. I forget the pinion/spur combo I am running.

I'm just gonna jump in, even though I'm newly back in the hobby just like you.
I had a JRx2 back in the day... recently acquired an RC10t from Ebay.
While I picked up what could essentially be an RTR, it needed some work.
It had been bashed pretty heavily.
I decided to go brushless with a decent deal from an RCtech forum member.
I ended up w/ a Novak GTB and Novak 10.5 motor.
My truck was geared as low as possible, and I recently purchased some new 81 tooth spurs and 6 robinson pinions, odd sizes from 15-25 tooth.
I already know the 81 tooth spur and 14 tooth pinion don't mesh up because the motor hits the tranny not allowing the gears to meet.
But, if you're looking to experiment a little, I'd suggest getting the Robinson pinion set (they sell the odd or even pack). For the price you pay for a single pinion, the Robinson set can't really be beat.
JRX2 in the late 80s... have since come to my senses with the RC10T, yes of course it's vintage! Wife is always destroying her Tamiaya LunchBox to call me her personal mechanic a few more times. Enjoying the fresh build of an RJ Speed Digger.

Got my parts yesterday.
Truck is back up and running... and man, is it fast!
I'm having some glitching problems, probably due to crap radio and receiver so I'm not gonna throw the fastest gear set in there yet.
But, I did bring the final drive ratio from 13.98 to 9.59.
That means that if the truck was doing 20mph top speed (which i think is a bit low, in actuality), it should now do 29mph.
If and when I do decide to put that monster 25T pinion in, that same 20mph top speed would bump up to 38mph. :D

Many readers will already know this but I'll post it here because it seems like a good thread to have this info...

(spur tooth count ÷ pinion tooth count) x transmission ratio = final gear ratio

So I picked up a Reedy 17t Radon.

I have a 76/25 * 1.83 (assuming ratio from 6 gear tranny) = 5.56 (48 pitch)

That is a bit low but with a 17t motor i might be ok for now. I am just playing in the yard.

I will tweak the pinion/spur combo a bit to get some more top end but for now I am happy.

For my "T" I am going to go brushless also with some 2cell Lipo's.

I would go with a larger spur and a smaller pinion, specially if you are bashing. something like a 87/20, or lower pinion specially if you are using a 6 gear trany.
