Kyosho Inferno ST resto-mod

Post by hyap463 »

Hey All!

Left the hobby moons ago in ~99/2000 but I was always a Kyosho fan and had my fair share of Infernos/Burns (MP5, DX, USA1) and SuperTens, Gp10s, etc.

I always wanted the ST but it was not popular growing up in Singapore/Indonesia so I never really saw one but admired it and the GP-20 in the print catalogs. I will add the GP20 at some point but this one will keep me busy!

Will update the thread as the build progresses, for now I just started removing the broken bits (fuel tank, old Futaba receiver, engine mounts) and inventorying what parts need to be sourced :)

Cleaned the tires with some Tuf Shine tire cleaner that I always use to remove dealers' silicone tire shine from my car tires but the 20+ yr old dirt is stubborn! I guess they're clean enough and the leftover dirt adds some cred.. like those off roaders driving around malls w/ dirt from wheeling ;)

The cracks are bad though, so I'll probably try my best to patch the tires with super glue and some bicycle tire tube repair patches and just use them for display and gentle runs. If anyone has new tires BS132 please let me know! The tires and wheels are so cool looking but I'm planning on installing 17mm hubs and running modern buggy / truggy tires

I need to test the servos but will probably put them up on eBay for $5 if they still work. The two decade old S148 and the 9202 aircraft servo will be replaced with Futaba digital servos :)

Hi All

Does anyone know what Clutch Bell needs to be used for the GS21-CR with the stock BS122 53T Spur gear?

The manual I found https://www.retromodelisme.com/manuel_page/228/inferno-st-stadium-truck-from-1992-kyosho.html calls out FM-82 which is a 15T clutch bell but if you look at Page 22 it says Clutch Bell (15T) which is FM222.

I guess I'll find out when I mount the GS21 against the stock 53T spur gear since the GS21 mounting holes are non adjustable :)

Update

I bought a really nice parts car (wide-body GP20) with a GS21 CR that must have sat on the shelves more than it ran. I am basically putting Inferno ST specific parts on the GP20.

- Rebuilt the GS21CR with a new oil seal, new recoil starter/back plate seal, new throttle body dust boot. Parts: 6520-15, 6520-17-4, 6520-15 (in that order)
- Rebuilt front and rear diffs with Kyosho #5000 diff grease, re-shimmed the diffs for proper backlash. Used this shim set: Kyosho 96772 Shims. Reused the good Tamiya sealed bearings from the parts car
- Cleaned parts car chassis
- Super gluing the cracked tires to salvage the un-obtanium replacement tires (BS-133). I used Bob Smith Industries Rubber Toughened CA Glue and Bell's bicycle tire tube patch kit. Came out ok actually!
- Repainted the wheels, removed old glue from tires and wheels, repainted front brush guard

Finally some real progress, got all 3 diffs completed

- New 53T spur gear from Australia
- New bearings from Boca bearings
- Kyosho 5000 diff grease front and back, 30000 in center diff
- Kyosho IFW34 non plastic brake discs - hopefully these don't melt as easily with the raging power of the GS21CR :P

Slowly getting there!

Front and rear suspension done
Rebuilt (seals only) GS21CR
Inferno GT manifold (a bit too close to the rear shocks, might look for a vintage option that isn't as close)

Here are some before and now

Forgot to update this group!

The build is done, just need to spend a weekend painting the body that I mostly cleared. It’ll be box art but I will use pink (Tamiya cherry red) instead of red in homage to the original pink paint scheme :)

The wheels and tires are very wobbly but ok for bashing around a parking lot. Waiting for associated nomad tires to tune the motors HS needle

Took advantage of the ☀️ and finished painting, pinstriped it and put the MCI repro decals on it! The OG Inferno ST is done!
Paints: PS33, PS62, PS6, PS48 (for whatever’s left of the rollcage), PS5 for the bed and of course PS1

Very nice job. The paint looks great. I love these old inferno based models.
