It does look like the love child of a SilverStar and a Demon 2DH.... surprised there are no letter ID markings on the underside of the PCB. The soldering makes me think home made. I have just forwarded the pictures to Nick Marson (Mr. NOSRAM himself) in case he remembers anything like this from BITD.

What is this? It claims to be an RC12L.

Yep, the first of the 'R' range which replaced the 'L' names kits. First link car they did rather than T-bar
I was told the R stood for Road, and they wanted to change it as originally the L was for Losi as Gil Jnr designed the original RC12L

So this seems like a cross between a 12L and 12R with both T bar and linkage:

That would be too simple
A little confusion on the terms. The side links referred to on the R5 are the plastic rods that run front to rear next to the battery. Along with the centre pivot they do the same job the T-bar did.
The linkages I think you're referring to on teh T-bar car are side dampers (the sliding rods just in front of the rear pod that run side to side).
These replaced the centre damper disc from the standard 'L' range of cars from AE. It was an option offered by a few companies I think, like CRC.
Hope that makes sense.
I think that car is a an RC12LC with side damper conversion.

So it's based on a Traxxas truck...but I see the Associated battery cups and I'm not quite sure what the chassis is. Any opinions? Thanks!

Could be a Blue Eagle LS, but I suspect it is an earlier Blue Eagle with the long rear suspension added. The chassis is typical of the earlier Eagle and blue Eagle series- early chassis were painted with a black glittery paint. The shape should have changed by the time the LS arrived.

Original blue eagle chassis, the LS has a flat sided chassis , long version of a trx1 and wider at the front to take a wider front bulkhead, rear arms were also longer like Gomachv said

Here’s a blue eagle on Tamiya club

Impulse buy with poor camera angles. Does anyone recognize the front and rear bulkheads?

Additional info, this is a short arm dirt modified car build on a graphite chassis
