Losi XX modern runner build

Post by Lavigna »

I love my XX Kinwald Trinity buggy so much I really wanted to build another. I'm planning to build this up into a high end runner with real performance potential, and modern electronics. I am also considering using some parts from the current 22 line, such as shocks. This is still up for debate though.

I'm starting with a beautiful new Standard length Graphite chassis. I am excited to use these beautiful Rusti Designs CF pieces.

I am still deciding on which combination of rear arms and Trinity rear block to use. The older pre-CR arms are longer, and therefore can be used with the more narrow XXX Trinity rear block. Decisions...

The 2.61 (truck) transmission is built up using all new pieces. Upgrades include these beautiful polished MIP lightened outdrives, and an aluminum diff nut. I also spent a lot of time trying to polish the transmission case for a unique aesthetics appearance, but the change is minimal.

I can say this is easily the smoothest XX series diff I have ever built. I'm not entirely sure why.

Looks like a great start! The diff nut, was that in a kit or separate? Also the diff gear, who makes that snd is it aluminum?

There is nothing more satisfying to me when building a car is when you get the diff perfect and shocks smooth😁. I can sit there a spin it all day long🤣.

Looking forward to this bud!

I've been running my MIP Aluminum axles with Weed Whacker Line for over a week in my Super XXT at the Track. No issues and no wear on the Titanium Outdrives! I had to glue them with CA glue.

The Super XXT has a one lap Handicap against a Brushed 13T XXT at the track(my buddy runs his and I let him almost lap me.) I have a 22T Slipper coming. The Brushless motors have too much torque, even for the dual slipper cranked down.

Well, I am trying to build this up so it's not just another XX buggy. I was looking at the beautiful Losi lightened motor plate, and thought it would be so cool if the milled lines went all the way through.

It was scary taking a dremel to a NIB MK1 lightened plate. I removed the little tab for the clutch cover and then sanded and smoothed all the stamped edges. I carefully cut out each milled line with a dremel, and then filed it smooth.

These plates have a clear anodizing finish. I polished that off on the back to bottom side. I'm still undecided if I'm going to polish the rest or re-anodized it.

I like how the milled lines are now visible on all sides and bottom. It sure wasn't easy work, and I was lucky I didn't have a single slip with the dremel. The second picture shows the motor plate straight from the bag.

That looks beautiful Lavigna! But would those holes now permit more dirt and crap to enter? Probably a non-issue if it's a shelfer. :)

The modern cars have slotted motor plates and no gear covers, so I am not worried about it. It probably won't get run much anyways, lol.

I removed the rest of the clear anodizing and polished it all up. I mounted it up to the transmission using the Factory Works motor centering kit. I think this works really well with the milled motor plate and MIP outdrives. They all share the same look of machined and minimal.

These are the Factory Works instructions.

Really fine work on the motor plate, exceptional.
Can't wait to see this build unveil.

^ Thanks!

I was planning to install the stock slipper components (below), but then I began looking at the modern 22 series pads and plates. They have much greater surface area, and they feature the machined cuts for more grip. They fit well with just a few small modifications. The newer slipper should be better suited for the power of brushless.

As usual an incredible building from Lavigna

Regarding the tranny, why do you use the truck tranny? To better suit the brushless power?

Have a nice week-end!

Thanks Essajay! I am using the truck transmission because I had all the pieces already. I am trying to keep my shopping on this build to a minimum. Over the years I have gathered a lot of truck XXT parts. Also, Kinwald used to use the 2.6 transmission on his XX buggies, so it's a small nod to him.

I did the Kinwald mod to the front carriers and cut off the top tab. It now has a direct kingpin setup carried over from the XXT.

In the theme of trying to make this a unique build, I decided to cut out the upper plate. I then cut some carbon fiber sheet to slot inside. I sealed it from the underside. Getting it all to fit by hand was a pain, but I'm happy with the result.
